Replacing "smog" pump

I have a 2001 Blazer, automatic 4 x 4. Has anyone ever tried to eliminate the secondary air pump or maybe replace it with a mechanical instead of an electrical one? I read several threads about repairing the existing system, but not about doing away with it. Is this possible or should I just seek to repair what I have. I am getting a code po418 which tells me that something is wrong in the secondary air system. The pump was froze and I got it unstuck, but the code keeps returning.

the air pump on your car is calf. or c.a.r.b. federal although its not required in the rest of the country the cel. being off and monitor reset is. the most common reason theses pumps lock up is water (did water come out of yours?)

most likely the pump is done even though it runs the motor will draw too much and blow the fuse (on the right fender behind the battery) when you get it lined out get a 1\2" pipe nipple and some heater hose and move the intake away from the front of the radiator.

You can drain the water from it and sometimes that will fix it.

I'll replace the pump. I did drain the water and it does pump air. However the code 418 returns within an hour of clearing the code. The fuse never blows though. I've cleared the code 3 times. Again I'll have to bite the bullet and replace the pump. Thanks everyone!!!!

If that pumps spins freely it may be OK if you disassembled it and made sure nothing was in the impeller. Ckeck the vac hose that runs from the intake down to small vac switch mounted right next to the pump and the hoses from that to the pump - often cut, rotten (heat caused) or a rub hole. That pump feeds to each manifold thru check valves that are spring loaded and if water was in the pump water was injected/sucked thru those and they are now rusted or stuck that also triggers the code. About $15 each but take the pipe off the exhaust to replace cause they willlll be heat welded on and you will need a vise to free. Also that little 2" piece of hose is dealer only and high heat so get them there if you rip one. Drivers side remove the air filter box to get to. Did mine and extend intake hose into the fender by battery.
