D16Z6 would be the best bet as it has a lot going for it.
The aftermarket is huge, they are cheaper than the next gen y8, they require less modification of upgrading to OBD-1, the Y8's OBD-2 stinks compared to the z6's OBD-1, and of course the infamous sohc vtec that it offers. It also is better with mods than the y8 is. (air intake for example)

you can run the y8 obd1...even obd0 with a vtec switch or a PR3 ecu...and add the wires for vtec.
i also say d16z6...lots of aftermarket, cheap, an ok amount of power and you can find parts for it ...unlike say the dohc zc.but...if you read my sig you know what im all about...lol d15b 1.5 sohc vtec (pretty much same output as a d16z6)

if you are going to just throw an engine in and do some bolt ons then get a z6 but if you plan on boosting then i would go for a a6 with head work and cams. i have driven both and like the power curve of the lopey a6 over a tame z6 w/ a cam but that is just me and vtec will get better milage

im just curious why people think its so hard to find aftermarket parts...like bolt ons for a zc...and d series headers will work.you can get intake for it new spark plug wires or w/e the hell else you wanna try to pull one horspower out of...and i heard b16 cams work on dohc zc's but im not sur how that works due to the fact that b16s have vtec...basically what im trying to say is its as easy to get i/h/e...the basic bolt ons for the zc as it is for the single cam vtecs. if you really want a lot of power dont even mess with d series because by the time you "build" your d series you could have bought a b series swap that would prolly whoop your ass...unless you boost or spray with your d series...and the zc would be a better motor to boost or spray with because the bottom end is stronger supposedly

This is true to some extent. I have an A6 with a few mods and although I can get up in the power band relatively quick, it sure hurts my gas mileage when I do it. Interesting note though, I have only driven a vtec car once and I'm not sure if it was even running right (no tach no speedo) and I can't hear too good so I don't know what the vtec whine is really all about. However, I know that my engine does make a somewhat different sound above 5k rpms if that is similar to vtec. But my exhaust kind of drowns it out...
Anyway, it really depends on what you want the car for. I commute 80 miles a day and I still average about 33mpg.

its not the b16 cams just the cam gears.for the zc its not that its hard to find the parts, people just get confused with what they need. the motor in the older integras are almost the same as a ZC...so you can find parts there

Yeah the d16a1 is a ZC with mild cams isnt it? I saw one in an 88 Integra...just before I stole the MAP sensor for my B16A..
