728i buying

Hi There i am new to this forum and i am thinking of buying a 728i for my next
car , I am looking for information regarding common faults running costs and parts availability, Also what are they like to work on.

Don't buy that car. 7 series are the worst. They are horrible with power steering fluid (if you ever have to replace a power steering reservoir you will curse the day you were born). Rear shocks tend to leak. Since the parts come from Germany they are very expensive to fix at shops. Around $650 for a brake and rotor job (plus the sensors for the pads). Honestly, they are not worth the trouble. BMW's in Germany are only made to be driven to 80,000 miles then thrown away, they are sports cars...just toys. Not meant to be work horses and grocery getters.

Yup them 7 series are expensive. My 1988 750 needed a driveshaft at 120,000 miles, cost was $360 and install was $150. altenator went south at 100,000 miles, 140 amp and $125 to replace with a three year warranty. Needed new brakes and rotors at 80,000 miles, brake pads were $45 per axle and rotors (Brembo) were $50 each. Oh, those sensors, yup needed two at $5 each. Now the rear struts are getting soft, self levelers, with only 140,000 miles on them and they are pricey at $350 each and I had to repalce the front strut inserts at 110,000 miles and they were those Bilsteins Touring at $65 each. So beware, they don't build cars like they use to.

WEBMASTERZ i didnt say they CAN'T go high mileage, i just said they weren't built to last that long.

BEAR, dont forget that those Bilstein shocks have a lifetime warranty, when they go out, send them back and they will be rebuilt for free.

I did write with tongue in cheek, but I was honest on my views and my 1988 (build date of 11/87) runs great. I do change transmission fluid every 15,000 miles (drain plug on bottom of pan) and the fluid and filter every 30,00 (REDLINE D4ATF). I run MOBIL-1, 15W50 and change that oil every year or 15,000 miles whiever comes first (MOBIL agrees with my schedule). This is a great car and even though the V-12 eats a bit of regular grade fuel (15 MPG city and 21 MPG highway) I would not trade her, a fast and stable highway cruiser.

Glad to be able to pass on something worthwhile. Also, before you travel down the BMW road too far, Beemers have two wheels and Bimmers have four.
