I really apologize in advance if this is beaten to death, but..
Are the V6 5speed trannies the same as the v8 5speed trannies in the fourth gen body style camaros? There's a guy parting a V6 out and has one available.
Anyone have any outside reading I can do on this real quick.. I'm putting a 327 in front of a datsun and want a 5 speed tranny because autos are boring.
Thanks in advance.

Why not a 6 speed?

T56 is generally heavier and more expensive than a T5. I'm not aiming to spend a whole lot on the swap just yet. I'd like to do one first and be able to make mistakes without sinking too much money into the project, then do it right when I have more money to spend.

4th gen v8 camaros didn't use 5-speeds... it was only the t56 6-speed... with the exception of built t-5's, most t5's cannot handle the torque output of a 350, that's why 350tpi third gen camaros didn't even have a manual tranny option... so to answer your question, they're definatley not the same

Also, if you're gonna go T-5, get WC (World Class) one for the meantime. And then when your ready to sink money in it, get it rebuilt with some heavy specs. You'll have to be very gentle with that T-5 until it get rebuilt, no 4K rpm drops with slicks = gameover for T-5.

Don't worry Link, I work for free. I just don't have a sig since I don't have a car.

I've heard the same thing about world class T5s.. there any other manual trannies that will hold any kind of power behind a 327 that aren't $1500 a pop?

You're probably out of luck there, I would think.

i think what he really needs to know is not if a v6 tranny will hold up, but whether it will BOLT up, which from what i've read, won't.

What Geno said was my original question, yes. Thank you for that.
The followup question is: are there any alternatives to a t5 or t56 that I can put behind a small block chevrolet. Muncie 4 speed?

Completely off the topic that you're on, but I gotta question Prelewd. Are you puttin the 327 in that 280Z Datsun?? Man, those things are sick when they got small blocks under the hood. Especially this guy who put an LS2 in his: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/438021. But yeah, good luck man, and have fun with that thing.

That's the plan. Either my 240z or my 280z. It'll probably come down to the one that I want to keep least, which will be the 280z. This first time will be a shakedown run until I do one that I want to keep. Should be up for sale soon after completion.
I'd like to eventually build up my skills to a supercharged LS1 with a T56. 2500 lbs + boosted LS1 = world beater.

I love Datsun Zs...the first car I drove after I got my license was an 81 280ZX 2X2...The suspension made it fun to drive even if it was a dog(3 speed auto)
I love those cars...
