What are those mangled holes from? I hope that isn't where the rivets used to be because you will probably need to reuse the same hole and if they are all distorted it may be tough. I honestly haven't done that job on a 4th gen, so I can't tell...

l got the new motor and l started second round with the power window!
well, l got 9.6v drill and it was a little bit hard to drill out the rivets but l forced it and l did it!
everythingelse was PIECE OF CAKE.. l still cant believe that l replaced the power window motor with no auto knowledge BY MYSELF. (actually l am good at using screw drivers, drills.. fixing stuffs at home.. )
here are the pics of second round! oh.. by the way, l got the power window 54.99 bucks from advance auto parts.

Sorry i couldn't get back to you earlier...But good job getting it done. My window did not move when i took out the old motor and i was told to hold it up but i forgot and it was when i was done that i realized i did not hold it up.
The next problem that i think i saw on your car too is the scratches on the windows from the motors does anyone know where i can get those and any experience taking them out...

that scratch is not from the motor man.. inside the door panel, there are 2 cloth part tocuhes the window when the window goes up and down. mine is broken but just one and thats why it scrached my window. today l found out the scrach was from that litte metal part.. yours could be that too.. didnt u see any metal parts broken or sticking out?

do this, replace the battery, then have auto zone or someone put a meter on the battery and it tells you if the alternator is putting out enough volts or not.

Take the car to AutoZone.
They can check your charging system and tell you what is wrong.
Don't pay unless you know for sure!!

with the guys i see walking around the garage that are so call "fixing" car. I saw this one kid take a tire off the rack and throw it across the room like a fresbie. And they had my moms jeep and they did a oil change and for got to put the oil drain plug on all the way, and all the oil got out and we saw it in the mirror, and they put oil back in it and the rod started knocking. And they had my dads car and JANKED the oil dip stick out and broke the handel off and the metal peace fell back in to the pan. They are so dumb there.

I'm not defending Wal-mart here, because they suck something aweful, but the new dipsticks anymore suck. I've had them break off and do that exact same thing and I was by no means manhandling it, inless taking it out to check it is manhandling. Anyway, Wal-mart "techs" get like $7 an hour no matter what, so they tend to be slow and not the best in quality or knowledge as noone with any skill or talent can live on $7 an hour.

i worked there a few years ago, after 2 months i was the auto shop manager, there were people in the shop that were there for 3 years, but they never had any drive, or any real vehicle knowledge, i spent 3 hours trying to explain suck-squeeze-bang-blow to a guy, and he still didn't get it, i'd personally never bring my car there for anything, but a free battery test, who could screw that up, all they could do is reverse the connections, and the machine just tells them it's wrong, fool proof.

replace the battery first, why do the alt first? it is more expensive. Just replace the battery, then turn around and sell it.

if l replace the battery first, will it last for a while even if the alternator is bad?
97cavalier
03-08-2006, 10:25 PM
if the alternator is "bad" like all the way you would be lucky if you get 2 starts off a new battery. Do it the cheep way, install a new battery, get the amp gauge on it then, THEN if it still shows the alternator is not putting out enough, that i when you hurry and sell it. But the stock lt1 alternators usally last 150,00 miles at least. So do that first.

ya, my alternator was compleltely shot, i drove it for over 6 months with no problems, and i did alot of night time trips, finally, the alternator blew out, even if the alternator is at 50% it'll still charge the battery, just less...
if your doing alot of little short trips, where you drive 2 blocks, turn it off and start it again, the battery won't last very long without needing a charge.

If your alternator was completly shot that means it was not giving off any charge, it is impossible for the motor to run with out the alternator charging.

My brother has a pos Toyota Tercel a little 2 door 1.5 four banger. lol. And he thought his batter was going dead because the batter light was on so we went to autozone and they said that the alternator was going out so were going down the high way to go to a garage to get it fixed and it was about 20 miles away, and half way there the car started bucking REALLY BAD, i was oh crap, the alternator is done, so we coasted it till about 1 mile from the shop and had to have it towed, it sucked.

when my alternator blew, i was on a road trip and it was night time so i had my lights on, and i had to drive about 8 miles to the next town after it went, good thing i had a practically brand new battery, the alternator blew right out, it was totally black and siezed solid, i made it to about a half mile out of town and my lights were so dim i just turned them off. still managed to make it to town and get a new alternator, but man did that suck.
