Hi,
I've got a 1995 Maxima with the 6 cyl engine. It had a problem where it was harder and harder to start. Then one day it wouldn't start at all.
While in the field (read that as parking lot) I checked for spark at the plugs (took them out and turned it over while grounding it....) it sparked and also checked the fuel pump by removing the hose after the filter on the firewall. It squirted gas.
We could also spray ether (starter fluid) in there and it would run as long as you kept spraying it in the trottle body.
It seemed like the MAF sensor was the problem after looking at everything here and on the net.
Got a new MAF sensor and put it on. And then even put the voltmeter on it and check the numbers according to Autozone.com. Seemed reasonably within spec. Also checked the Throtle position sensor and it seemed in spec. But it still wouldn't start. In fact, it didn't even seem to try... so we tried the starting fluid again. But, now it wouldn't run even with the starter fluid. SO, took out the spark plugs again... this time no spark. Also decided to try to put the voltmeter on the leads for one of the fuel injectors.... it didn't register anything. But I'm not SURE if I got a good read on those or not.
Tried to reset the ECM ( the control module to the right of the gas pedal.) by the litte screw knob. Nothing. Then tried taking off the ground to the battery for 24 hours.... Nothing. Then even tried to re-seat the plug to the ecm by taking it out and putting it back in and still nothing. The ether still doesn't work.
What could cause the spark to stop sparking?? The camshaft postion sensor? I haven't been able to find it on the car as most of the stuff on the net has pictures that are just a little different than my car.
Any ideas??? I'm at a loss.
Thanks,
Walt :banghead:

- 1st voltage check, at batt, at ECU.
- Campos sensor has to sit in the end of a cam. Gotta find it.
Take off, ign ON, rotate. Do injectors click?. If so, ECU is 'alive' up to a point. (Btw. U need a scope to register the 50mS pulse)
- Measure Actual Gas Pressure. (squirt isnt enough)
- Disconnect MAF, is there now spark? (your new MAF may be DOA)
- U cannot reset ECU via tst selector
- Original degrading start -problem may be dying coilpacks. They just tend to die of age, no way but replace.
- lastly, try the self diag
- Harness, relay, grounding checks, ... pages 5,9,10,14, see link below
