Odometer issue
Santa Flaws

Hello, I have a 2001 Santa Fe 2WD. I noticed my speedometer and odomter were showing blank readings one day during a road trip. I searched the fuse panel and noticed the fuse for the "cluster" was burnt (bad fuse maybe?!).
What is the consequence of driving my vehicle without a working odometer? I'm sure it's frowned upon by the manufacturer and dealer because I don't think the odometer reading went up during those 50 or 80 kms before I noticed and so the reading is out. Shouldn't the engine light keep track of a circuit problem like this? Is the true odometer reading kept inside the computer? Can I rematch the two so I don't trip any diagnostic red flags? Is there a way to check the diagnostics without paying an arm and a leg?
Any guidance or assistance would be appreciated! My warranty expired a while back so getting the circuit looked at under warranty isn't possible unfortunately :-(
Thanks!

This is something new, never heard this happening before. I wonder if lowsonoma has seen anything like this ove at the shop. One would think the ETACS keeps track of the odometer reading, but I could be wrong.
Did you take it in to get fix?

The mileage for the odometer display is stored in the cluster. I don't think the computer stores the mileage as well. I know when we have to replace a cluster, we send the cluster to a company in Michigan to have the mileage programmed into the cluster. During this time and car has to stay at the shop and cannot leave. As far as I know, mileage is not stored anywhere other than the cluster.

My '02 had the Odometer cut in and out on long trips. Has been happening for about 2 years. At first it was only a few minutes on a 1000 mile trip. It has become progressivly worse. At this point it only shows the speed occasionally. I did notice that the ODO stops clocking when the spedo is cut out. Any thoughts on this intermittant problem?

The intermittent operation is often caused by the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission.

I've yet to install it on my wife's car but it should be under the throttle body towards the back. Her odometer and speedometer do the intermittent thing as well. Her SF is an '03 so check the proper part #s when you order.
