I'll be doing the background after I render the car.
the car is for the customer. The background is for a friend so it's not vital to me getting my $$.

Here's the latest on the Ghia.
http://www.58vw.com/af/rg12.jpg
I dropped a medium grey as a base coat and just started on the wheels. You can see my channels on the right. Each color is in a separate channels. I use the selection layer to make selections (lol) and then fill the selection on the appropriate channel. Basically I make a coloring book and then limit myself to 8 or so crayons (the channels)
here's a close up with the selection channel on:

I can show you an example of why I think channels are cool.
I decided a red interior would look pretty hot so I created an interior base channel and made it red and then I did an interior shadow channel and made it dark dark red, then I rendered the seats by selecting the areas and using the airbrush and gradient tools.
Here's the result.
http://www.58vw.com/af/rg16.jpg
Well this guys interior is actually kinda grey looking in the picture but I thought a slight putty might work for him....we'll see. So all I had to do was double click the interior base channel and change it's color to somethin I thought was cool then double click the interior shadow channel and do the same thing and there it is.
http://www.58vw.com/af/rg17.jpg
Now...yes you can do that in layers too...sorta but in channels it's cooler...I guess ultimately because I said so, which isn't really a very good example at all. That being said ignore everything I wrote before this.

Here's the latest with the red interior which may be changed to another color, but I won't tell you how.

Wow, your toons always make for great "eye-candy."
I wish Expressions had a channel feature, I will have to use layers to create color seps.

Just a question, how do you avoid jagged edges when rendering in Photoshop?

:grinyes: really nice. are you going for a rat rod look. i was just wondering because the silver/grey with red seems to scream hot rod. anyway really really nice work.

it was supposed to be a semi-rat rod Ghia. There's a small VW movement all about the rod look

Alex,
The key to not getting jaggy lines lies in resolution. I render all cars at 300 dpi. When you zoom in you can see the jaggy edges because it is pixel based (little squares of colour). That is the inherent difference between Pixel and vectors. vector lines are based on mathematical algorithms while pixel images are based on squares of colour and the interpolation between like pixels.
I got jaggy lines on my rough print layout because I selected the backgound around the car and expanded it by 1 pixel at a low resolution. When I do that same thing at 300 dpi you won't see any jaggy lines.
300 dpi is a fairly accepted resolution for most printing nowadays. Even magazines accept 300dpi tiff, eps, or in some cases PDF files. In general when I'm submitting art for magazines or other publications and they specify a PDF file (mostly my catalog stuff) I actually write those out at 600 dpi.
Hope that helps.
