86 cutlass dies when placed in drive

1986 cutlass supreme 307 quadrajet auto. i recently replaced the air pump and three check valves. noticed a water leak that came from the intake manifold gasket. replaced the gasket and started the motor but when i place it in drive or reverce the motor dies within 5 seconds. i replaced the cooling sensor and checked the voltage from the yellow and the black wire and i got 5 vdc with the key on. the vacuum hoses seem to be in the right places but then again im not sure. please help. thanks, john

i would first check for a vaccum leak and just note dont mest with the carb adjustments the carb is controled by the cars computer through the mixture control solinoid and the factory setting is best left alone.

i couldn't find any vacuum leaks. i will spray all lines with wd-40 to see if engine revs up. at the moment the rpm's seem to be very high. i will check it out with a tach. tomorrow. thanks. john

found problem. RPM was a little low. increased rpm and engine no longer dies when placed in drive.
