Security Light?

I have a 2001 Suburban and recently my security light has been turning on while driving. It doesn't have any affect on the vehicle other than just irritates me. In order to get it to turn off, I have to turn the truck off then back on....

Any thoughts on what might cause this. :banghead:

We've got a 99 model that does the same thing. It usually indicates that you are fixing to get stuck somewhere until the Passlock system resets. I think it is caused by the resistance value of the key measured by the ignition system being off. We have two keys to our truck, one that came with it, and one that we had made. The key that came with it usually has the problem. If you ever get stuck somewhere where the truck won't crank and the security light is flashing then you'll have to reset the system. Often if you let it sit it will reset on its own (usually around 1 hour). Search for passlock on this site and you'll get lots of ideas.

I had this same problem with my 2001. It got worse and worse (more frequent) until the darn thing would lock out the ignition at the worst times. It took some strong urging on my part to get the dealership to troubleshoot it and get it fixed. It was the Passlock system and the key/ignigtion componet in the column was replaced. Since then I have not had a problem. Fortunately mine was still under warranty.

There is a coded resistor in the lock cylinder(not the key) that is shown to the passlick system when you rotate the lock cylinder to start the truck. Since your light comes on when your driving, it means the passlock system is losing the resistance reference. You probally need the ignition lock cylinder replaced. It may get to the point where the truck won't start.

I had a 99 Suburban with this problem. I had to have it towed when it finally quit working all together and it would not start. Its was the ignition switch. Lucky for me the dealer was able to get it in the next day and fix it for me, bad news is the price almost $700.00. Totally suprised me. Should have found a way to bypass such a usless system. Anyway live and learn just a heads up that this is not a cheap repair.
