S-Trim Supercharged 5.0 vs Twin Turbo 5.0

I was reading up on home-made turbo systems over at turbomustangs.com for the past few months and since i wasplanning on putting an s-trim on my 1990 gt before i got into turbos, i thought i would ask your opinions on the subject.

I was thinking that i would make a jy intercooled twin turbo setup using 2 mitsubishi 14b that would cost about $1300-1500 total for everything i need (i have a friend that has the exact same system and thats what he said it would cost at the minimum). From what ive found out the most boost i could run is about 6-8 psi on 92 octane depending on the intercooler and stuff. With an AOD i could build boost off the line which is cool (for hella burnouts at least heh).

But on the other hand, with the $2500 supercharger i can supposedly run more boost even without the intercooler (with an IC on the SC it would be a lot more boost i assume), have less heat in the engine bay, can install it probably 5x-10x quicker. Especialy with all the exhaust/intake pipes/flanges to fab up for the turbo.

I know the S-trim would make the car faster, but with 90% street time and 10% strip it doesnt really mater, im more into it just for fun.
Hmm now that i typed this out im leaning twords the S-trim.

Thats what I did lol. I'd love to have a turbo on my car. But I bought an S-trim instead. Its will be quicker and easier to install. The turbo thing is great but for a first time boosted v8 experiance I'd suggest an S-trim. These little blowers can move some air and have put cars down the 1320 in the high 9's.

Don't look at just the boost PSI, I would bet that you can get more power out of an 9lb jy setup over a 12lbs S-trim.

I do agree. It is very possible to make more power with a couple t3 turbocoupe or equivalent turbos. But for simplicity I'd suggest the S-trim. Especially and this being a first time thing.

David,

What the heck is a tang housing? I never heard of that. Its a GTQ :)

I'll give the T76 after I blow up my engine :D

Tangenitial housing or some shit. Supposed to be much better power wise. I think its some kinda offset.

Here ya go Tony, and anyone else that is curious about the difference between a "tangential" turbine housing and an "on center" turbine housing.

14bs are way to small for a 5.0L engine. 2.0L engines a 14b (1g dsms) is considered a tiny turbo...390cfms is way too small for a 5.0L. Check out garrett air researchs turbo site they have some excellent, yet easy to understand formulas to calculate the proper size turbo(s) for your engine goals. http://www.turbobygarrett.com/turbobygarrett/tech_center/tech_center.html
Twin turbo setups are more complicated than a supercharger setup but will make more power in the end. If you know your car in and out 5.0L turbos are great, and most of the TT mustangs out there are foxes, if you can weld and fab shit yourself you can have an amazing setup for a fraction of the cost of an average supercharger setup. Turbomustangs.com is IMO one of the best sites to learn about turbochargers, regardless of platform. There is a huge wealth of information there and I find myself there from time to time referencing info for my DSM. It is an amazing site.

I agree, I'd run at least 60 trim T3's on the street, maybe dual hybrids if the car sees a lot of track use. It's not like the 5.0 is lacking for bottom end, so you can be really free on slower spoolups....
