Oil Pressure

I have a 85 Trans Am and just replaced the 305 engine with a GM 350. I never noticed it but is it normal to have oil pressure to go all the way to the top of the gauge (60) when I start the car? After it gets warm up, when I step on the gas, the pressure goes up to 60 .. but when in idling, the oil pressure comes down to the middle of the gauge. Is this normal or is it something I have to worry about?
Any help is appreciated.

Running really thin oil???
It tends to have higher pressure when cold...the motor is turning faster thanks to a higher idle.
60 PSI does sound like a lot though. Again...that could be in the oil weight.

Do your guages work right.
Mine dont so i have no idea wat is going on ever.
Ill take some tips if anyone knows anything about guages that go up and down as they please including the gas....LOL:screwy:

If its a brand new motor, the pressure may be a little higher until it breaks in fully. However, as luos said, 60 is high. I just rebuilt mine and im starting at about 35-40 tops. Id say you have too thick of an oil and you should try a 5w30 or something. The gauge could be reading faulty too but it is unlikely if it pretty steady about its readings. The new engine probably came with new sending units anyway, so if it is in the gauge circuit, it is probably in the wiring or gauge itself. I would try the thinner first though...cheaper and easier.
Any help is appreciated.

Your gas gauge is going to go up and down as the sending unit in the tank is in a spot that when you accelerate and come to a stop, the gas sloshing around moves the sender up and down.

bingo that is the gas gauge problem, but some people hvae a problem with when the turn there blinker on the volt meter goes with it, i here it is from the ground wire, but i am not shure.

What is the consequence if the oil pressure is too high? Would it hurt the engine?

It shouldn't, so long as it doesnt spike and peg the needle or anything. If it has line connections externally for like racing applications it could pop them or spring a leak, but inside the engine it should be ok. It would take over 100 psi for external fittings anyway usually, so youd probably be in the clear regardless. Only thing Id worry about is if the oil is too thick and the clearances inside the engine are tight enough that oil can't get in, it can prematurely wear the engine.

That makes sense what about reaching empty at about 1/4. I mean it dies out of gas at 1/4 so thats my Empty. Also my volt guage goes up and down when i accelerate. Water temp guage is just all the way dead all the time. RPMs and Mileage work fine

Your fuel sending unit probably is bad and needs to be replaced, thats why it is out 1/4 more than likely. The temp. sensor for the gauge is probably bad as well. The one for the computer is still ok thats why there are no check engine lights and it is running fine. The sensor for your temp. gauge is on the radiator on the pass side. The fuel sending unit will be a little mroe difficult...

Is it necessary to change transmission fluid often? I use my mini van to tow a 16-ft boat once in awhile and I noticed that the color of the transmission fluid is pretty dark color.

30,000 miles or so on a normally driven vehicle.
One that gets used for things like towing and such I would lower that maybe 8,000 miles to every 22,000 miles.
