1997 Grand Prix 6 cylinder check engine light is on. Tried disconnecting the battery cable (left it off for about an hour) did not help. Is there a reset button anywhere?

There is no reset button on the OBDII computer and disconnecting the battery cable will not work either. You need to have the computer scanned with a scanner or scantool. That will give you the codes. Once the problem is corrected the scanner can be used to delete the code and the light should go off. If you take the car to an Autozone they will scan it for you for free and give you advise on what to do to repair the problem.
If you want to post the codes here someone will help you fix the problem.

Which engine, 3800 or 3.1? Disconnecting the battery will not reset odb-ii DTC error codes and the SES/CEL light. You need a scanner/code reader which will hook up to the data port under the steering column. Places like Autozone will scan for free and list the DTC error codes for corrective action. It is important to see why the SES light has illuminated and normally it is an emissions related problem.
