The real question is how reliable is a car that has had oversized rims on it, the alternator being used past it's intended power, and so on. There is a right way of doing the things you mention but most of the time it is done the wrong way by idiots who worry about self image more than vehicle preservation. With that said I would pass on that explorer. Now explorers are not bad vehicles, they are just like any other vehicle, with regular maintenance and upkeep they can last a long time.
