WELL...it came today... MY LS1 MOTOR!!! Also got my motor mounts and crossmember in the other day. It came very very fast. It was dropped at a terminal in Maryland on monday and got here this afternoon. SOO HAPPY!!! Its a 2000 block and its got a spun crank bearing due to a pinched oil pickup seal that was messed up from the factory. The guy got it from a dealership that pulled it from a corvette. :jump3:

yeah need the heads and intake manifold and little stuff. I want to take the block to a machine shop before I go piecing stuff together. I think I can just have the crank turned and it should be good. The block has 20000 miles on it. Do I have to hone the block to put new rings on the pistons?
Mr. Luos
03-01-2006, 09:19 PM
Spun crank bearing?? I recommend a new crank. Just in case.

03-01-2006, 09:22 PM
if you tear it that far down, mide as well do all of you performance work now on it.
92zcamaroperson
03-01-2006, 09:25 PM
you dont think jsut having it turned and polished would be good? Shouldnt throw off the balance or anything..
92zcamaroperson
03-01-2006, 09:33 PM
1000 for a new crank isnt going to happen. If I can find a nice used stock one ill get it but I dont think I have anything to worry about if I just get it turned and inspected.

Depends.
Machine shop can tell you more than I can.
If you can...take it to an LSx type shop. The LS1 isn't your typical SBC and some guys have had problems with just ordinary machine shops not being 'picky' enough when building.

yeah thats true I have heard about some of those old time shops turning people down. There are hundreds of shops around orlando so I should be ok.
Mr. Luos

Good luck with it!!!
Spun bearing can permanently damage the crank. Hopefully this one didn't.

what are your other plans while dropping the LS1.. t56? rear end?
92zcamaroperson
03-01-2006, 11:29 PM
if I can dig up another 10 bolt with some 3.73's in decent condition ill change the rear...otherwise ill keep this one till it blows up. staying auto with the trans. an m6 would be cool and all but id prefer auto...less to think about...so im goin 4l60e...

have you seen the ls1 swap parts from thirdgenresource? it will make a swap damn simple, with little to no fab work, man i wish my swap was like that...

92zcamaroperson
03-02-2006, 01:55 PM
ive got the conversion motor mounts and crossmember. I got a ways to go but the swap itself should be pretty easy.
92zcamaroperson

Posted twice, that old motor must be nice!!!!!! Good stuff man, makes me wish i bought that LT1 when i had the chance.
drvngstorm05
03-02-2006, 02:47 PM
aside from the motor mounts, thirdgenresource also has fuel system upgrades, transmission crossmember (if you go w/ t56), shorty headers (sbc headers won't work, and ls1 headers wont fit the car), and a/c relocation brackets (so you never have to open the a/c system and recharge it) wiring, and cold air kit. the stuff would make a swap quite simple
here
http://www.fbodymotorsports.com/ls1_conversion_parts
if i had known about this, i prolly would have gone the ls1 route, but they weren't out till i had already got the lt1 and rebuilt it, so ya

oh and look in their photo gallery, then project cars, then the '91 ls1, then you can get a shit load of info on how to go about it... damn i wish i had known...
92zcamaroperson
03-02-2006, 03:04 PM
im gonna get the a/c brackets. Shorty headers do hardly anything over stock manifolds because they flow about the same. My plan is to get a pair sbc longtubes and ls1 header flanges from gm and chop the headers off about half way up and weld it all together. Hawks want 1000 dollars for longtube conversion headers so thats not happening. hawks made the lsx mounts and crossmember that I have.
92zcamaroperson
03-02-2006, 03:08 PM
www.speartech.com (http://www.speartech.com) has another very good description of the conversion.

hey luos what stock head castings were the best to get for the ls1?
drvngstorm05
03-02-2006, 05:12 PM
lsx header flanges, then sbc headers, plus the price of welding them together? sounds like that's gonna run you quite a bit of change... i'm guessin its cuz u want longtubes... me personally, i went with shorties because of the ease of installation, and the extra clearance, plus less work
Mr. Luos
03-02-2006, 06:37 PM
what happened to your old heads lous
They went with the LS1 when I sold it.
im gonna get the a/c brackets.
Do you know where you are getting them yet?
I still have my 1999 A/C stuff sitting here.
hey luos what stock head castings were the best to get for the ls1?
I believe 243. LS6 castings.
241 isn't bad either though.

the a/c brackets from hawks or wherever allow for the thirdgen a/c unit to be used. Long tubes will allow for much better breathing when using a heavy cam. I have 98 manifolds that I will use for a little while during the fitting process so that I can still drive the car. Are any of them(heads) better than any other once they are ported?

Congrats on the new power plant. A LS1 3rd Gen will be kick ass.
