Speedo screwed

Hey guys,
I have a 92 talon fwd nt 5spd 2.0 dohc. Problem is the speedometer stopped working. I pulled the speedo cable connector off of the tranny and spun the cable and the meter does move. I drove with the instrument cluster out and cable reconnected and no movement on the cable. Sounds like it is in the tranny. Anybody run across this before? Tranny was rebuilt last year for $800 but it is out of warrantee. Any easy fix? Thanks

Sounds to me like your vehicle speed sensor is broke. As far as I know, its within the tranny and you have to pull the tranny just to replace it. Definetly not gonna be an easy fix for ya.

The speedo sensor should sit right on top of the tranny. You'll have to take out the battery and all the stuff on that side. There's no sensors "inside" the tranny. It's one of the only sensors on the tranny. But it sits on the very top.

Actually, what david says is true but it is not the speed sensor. He stated above that when he spun the shaft on the sensor and that the needle moved. THIS EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME! My problem was that there was no plastic gear on the shaft, but when I bought that piece, I found out that the gear inside the tranny was missing. (The plastic gear that i just bought now had nothing to attach to it).


SO your problem is the gear that should be in the tranny, which most likely broke off. So your solution would have to be to drop the tranny.

I just lived with the problem.

How do you take it out? Does it thread into the tranny or something?

Thanks for the input folks. I hate it when reality sets in. I'll probably wait untill it is warmer before I take it further. Question, if the gears broke off, is there a chance of doing more damage to the tranny with the parts floating around in there? It is driving fine right now. Btw, very quick reply. Thanks again.

Well thats the thing....I would assume that the gear that broke off is plastic, and that it would just grind up with the spinning gears (which isnt good, lol) but I never heard anything strange come from my tranny. I would just say either live with the problem or drop the tranny and inspect.

But are you sure that your 92 has a speed SENSOR? i remeber reading on dsmtuners that the early 90's run off of a cable. Look into that before you drop the tranny!

It is definately a cable. I looked in the chiltons manual for my car and tranny. No sensor involved. It looks like I can pull the gear and shaft assembly through the top of the tranny. It said that there is a hold down screw that needs to be removed and it just sits in the housing. I haven't found the screw yet but I didn't look very hard. I will try to pull it out, but like you say, if the gear that drives the assembly is shot, it won't help much.

Right the bolt that holds the gear in place should be a 10 mm bolt (it was on my 97 atleast)
