power programmers???

Hey all, I was just wanting to know if all those power programmers really work, such as the Hypertech III and the JET programmer. Do they really do all they say they do or are they just blowing smoke up our asses. I was just reading about them and was just wondering. Also, what does a K&N air flow kit sound like. I read that it make your truck louder. How much louder does it sound and can you really tell a HP gain and firmer shifts in your automatic tranny. I know its alot of questions, but I was thinking of buying one but I just wanted to know for sure. Thanks

Yes they do work. I have hypertech III and its pretty good. With shift firmness on its still smooth but you can feel it ingage. If you havent bought anything yet and want huge gain take it to a shop and get it hooked up to a laptop. thats my next move i only bought the handheld because the stealership carried that brand and i wanted them to install for the first time. Just worry about wreckin my new truck. as for the intake thats the best bang for your buck i bought one that allows a throttle body spacer as some models like k&n don't give you clearance. As for the TB spacer I'm still undecided. I think the throttle responce is better when its wide open but as far as better on gas or more hp Not to sure. You can hear my intake around mid throttle acceling to full and it sounds real good. Hope that helps dude. :D
P.S. now that i think about it if anyone has programed their own comp with one of these types of tuners please give some feedback as to how it went for you. I would like to be able to change mine back and fourth from econo to performance. thanks

I've had the Hypertech PPIII for a little over a month, & I'm selling it this week. I was told at the shop I bought it from that the programmer plus the cat back exhaust system I already had, I would see huge gains in H.P. and better gas mileage. Bull! I'm sure it does fine for the guys who want to improve thier quarter mile track times. For me, It was a big waste of money.
I'm still researching the different intake systems, so I can't comment as of yet on those. I'm sure there will be some who dissagree, but thats what this forum is for anyway.

I noticed a difference in throttle response in normal day-to-day driving, especially when tuned for high octane. I was also able to adjust speedometer for tire size and shift firmness. As far as better gas mileage==no change. More HP and better mileage(aftermarket)-don't believe it. If anyone gets the laptop tuning please post the results, w/ only 12k miles-I'm not going to be the guinea pig.

The handheld programmers are nice if you want to change your settings often. If you really want a power/mpg increase, get a custom tune such as a Nelson, wait4me, or westers.

I personally have the nelson and wouldn't give it up for the world. Sell the hypercrap and get the real stuff!! :D

how aggressive can you get with this stuff before you start to fall apart though? I'd like to have the truck last a long time but i also want some jam out of it. If you drive it nice after you get this nelson tune can you see better mpg?

Mines the most agressive 87 octane tune you can get. Nothing's ever fallen apart on me, and its been in there for 2 years.

if you drive it nice, you will see a good increase in mileage. I drove mine like I stole it and still got 16+ mpg.

The Nelson tune I had on my '01 was for MPG. It got 2 - 2 1/2 MPG and also gave it the get up and go I wanted. For the money I would never go to a handheld, full tuning is the way to go. Handhelds are overly cautious and try to hold all state laws. I promote Nelson all the time.

if you want the most bang for the buck, get a tune first. THen later you can add the catback and full length headers, not the shorty kind. After you add all that, call nelson back and tell him what you've done, install the fresh tune he sends you and then haul arse!

Cool thanks for the info I'll be getting the local shop to do my tune. Since they have a dyno there they said they will give stock hp, hypertech hp and laptop tune hp. All for $450 bucks cnd.(about $200 less then hypertech)

what is the power difference between this "nelson tune" and a supercharger as far as hp & tq? Anybody... I have an 05 5.3 and want to do something else. I have flow masters, k&n intake and superchip. the superchip changed the shifting more than anything as best I can tell, not sure on hp.

well a supercharger will give you significantly more power that a tune, even Allen cant top that. Those are two different animals. But a STS turbo and a nelson tune (STS's prefered tuner), that would be sick. I have a nelson and thinking about adding a STS in the next year or so.
