Bulb Brightness, and effectiveness

I have the angle eye projectors, and the ring is a HID color. So I decided to get some HID looking bulbs from PIAA. From what I can tell it doesn't produce as much light as a normal color bulb. Is this just me? Is there a 'HID' Bulb that I can get that will produce just as much light as a white bulb, or should I just fork over the money for an HID conversion kit? Or should I just get white bulbs? Thanks
