I've had this kit for years; glad I waited until my skills were polished a bit :icon16: Nobody will ever know what it takes to make this kit look good unless they build it themselves. This is a model that beginners don't need to bother with...not that there are many out there, but who knows if Revell might reissue it at some point (hopefully if they do it'll be a competition version  )

It's an old Revell Porsche 914-6 (6 cylinder/911 engine). Came in a Porsche multi-pack from '88; I bought it in a baggie separately from a legendary old store in Atlanta called Auto Motif that's now OOB.

Revell got the look of the car down pretty well but the engineering is pretty crude. The windshield frame was separate, the stock ride height was suitable for a Jeep. I had to do a ton of work to the body to get it looking like a Fujimi kit vs. an old '70's era Revell kit. I'm happy w/the results, it was fun getting it fixed up. I unearthed the model a week ago and have worked every evening and over the weekend on it. I've never seen another built unless it was a total glue bomb.

Paint is Testors Grabber Orange lacquer/clear. I airbrushed the clear. Kit is full-detail w/fairly simple engine detail. Wheels/tires/mirrors/wipers taken from a parts-kit Fujimi 911.

Very nice work indeed, and I love that orange paint on it. I'm unfamiliar with the Revell kit, but after your explanation of it I'd like to check one out to see just what kind of a nightmare you had to deal with.

You know, I hadn't been missing autocrosses enough. Thanks. Great looking build, though. I've never seen this kit before, but I can just imagine the work that went into it (my Healey is testing my patience like crazy). Gorgeous color for it too, all in all, fantastic build!

Nice work Bob. Comparing the 914 out of Wayne's box to yours is like night and day.

Bob, you are a machine! That looks fantastic!
Did you polish your paint job or just apply paint and clear? Looks great!
I always remember seeing a lime green one when I was a teenager. Always thought about that car. I used to call it the poor mans Porsche. Shame on me.

''I've never seen another built ..........'' neither have I and you don't see many real ones nowadays never mind models.
That's gorgeous and beautifully executed!

Thanks, most of the body was polished out w/3600 & 4000 grit micromesh followed by Scratch-X, though I haven't yet polished out the decklid-it came out pretty smooth but does need polishing (it's removable). I usually apply clear in 2 stages, wetsanding between coats so the final coat is as smooth as possible. It's Testors lacquer clear airbrushed w/a bit of Mr. Thinner. It tends to blush if applied directly from the can. Testors lacquers dry so rapidly it's easy to paint/sand/repaint in a relatively short timeframe. My Tamiya Polyester Putty started causing paint blistering on this (thus answering the dilemma on my Skag), so I had to quit using the dehydrator, and I threw away that garbage. Evercoat never gave me that problem.

Some people called this car the VW-Porsche, as most had a VW 4 cylinder engine. 914-6's were rare when new. My dad was interested in buying one back when they were new, lots of interior room for such a small car.

You have made an awasome effort on this.

I started building one myself a few months back, but the kit is so diffucult to get right, so I really admire the work you have done on this.

You also made a perfect choise with the color. Orange is THE color for the 914 :-)

Think I'll have to dig out my old kit again and start over....

Looks fantastic Bob! I never knew Revell had a plastic kit of this. I've been looking through ebay for all the old VW/Porsche kits and this never shows up:( So thanks agian for another kit added to the impossible to find list. ;)Keep up the great work!!

Thanks for all the comments :)

My club is building Porsches for one of this year's show themes; so I was glad to get this one done. More coming, 356A Speedster, 924 Martini (home-made decals), 904, Koenig 928, perhaps a second IROC racer.

Frank/Bluebaja or anyone else...this will be on display at NNL East in 4 weeks, and the Birmingham Classic NNL this weekend. My first NNL East in about 10 years :grinyes:

wow !!! I LOVE IT.. kinda reminds me of the car thats sitting in my driveway right now.... great job

oh by the way i admire your work to an extreme extent cause i have a friend with this kit, and even though the body details are accurate, there are a few very noticable flaws in the mold.. very nice

Just got back from Mardi Gras! Whooo. Any how, Bob, you officially suck just for having this kit. I love this car. When i bought my 71' MGB GT i was also looking at a 75' 914 but it had to many problems so i went with the MG, now i wish i didnt, LOL. Great build and i hope to meet you in 4 weeks at the NNL!

Another 'silk purse from a sows ear' !

Seeing this gives me hope to one day build my Monogram TR7 into something besides the lump in the kit box.
