What is a 99 trooper worth with a thrown rod in the block. Everything is very good condition and new tires. He is thinking of selling it for junk. I have a 5 acre lot and thought about parting it out. Any ideas? I am not sure what motor is in it. Is it worth fixing?

I'd say 3-4k tops.
Is it worth fixing? sure all you have to do is find a new engine and you're set! used ones go for 2-3k.
Maybe watch ebay and you may get lucky and score one for 1k.

If I told you I could get for $500.00...what would you think? Also has new tires. I could part it and make money...right? I did locate a 3.5L shortblock for $1500 completely remanufactured. Hopefully the heads are fine. It has an auto trans. I am trying to decide. Have these been good cars?

I found out that it is a 1996 rather then an 1999. Miscommunication with the guys girlfriend. It is silver 4X4 Trooper, loaded with power everything. Body is straight, no rust. It has 196,000 miles on it. Motor is bad, Automatic trans is questioned (do not know if it has be serviced). He had know problems as second owner until now. 3.2L Dual cam. It has a brand new battery, brakes, and 4 brand new Bridgestone Devo AT P24570R16 tires. It runs but there is a heavy knocking in the block. Mechanic believes a rod or wrist pin problem. I need to know if I will get hurt if I give him $500.00 for the vehicle. I am thinking about just selling it like it is on E-bay or possibility of fixing it myself. As soon as the knocking started he only drove it a short jog to the mechanic. It is possible that it is rebuildable. Any ideas?

I'd almost bet the knock is nothing more than a bad timing belt tensioner pusher. When the spring gets weak, the T-belt slaps against the inside of the cover & it sounds just like a rod knock. The pre 1998 engines are not known to spin bearings. The pre 1998 DOHC is rare (only a trooper option). Most were SOHC. I'd say buy it for $500!

DOHC was a option huh? I just asked the mechanic and that is what he told me. If he does't even know that it probably is a timing belt tensioner. The tires went for $109.00 a tire when I looked them up. I cannot see how I can get hurt on this one. When I was trying to locate a shortblock I could not find a DOHC. I did locate a remanufacture shortblock for $1573.00. But I thought I would dive in it and find out exactly what is wrong.
Now I am got to decide if I want to take the chance on driving it 40 miles. Worst case scenerio is I don't make it and buy the short block because I trash it. Best case a timing belt tensioner. Thanks for the information. So you must be a betting man to say that you thought it was a timing belt tensioner.
What I have read about the 1999 through the 2001 has not been good. The oil control ring problem was not on the 1996... right?
