2000 GT Trans Problem

I have a 2000 Grand Prix GT, 3.8L, 4T65E trans, with about 175K miles on the clock. On my way into work this morning, it started acting like the TCC is not locking up...the engine is now turning about 3200 RPM at 65 mph, which is a bunch higher than what I'm accustomed to. There is also a whining noise at highway speeds.

It seems to be shifting normally in city driving. The trans fluid and filter were changed about 5000 miles ago. Is there anything simple (disconnected wire, etc.) that I can look for that might be causing the problem?

Thanks in advance.

The bad news is I think the 4th shaft splines are stipped. 3200 is to high for just the TCC not locking up. I think your best bet is when your driving 65 and its @ 3200 pull it down into 3rd and see if the rpms change if not its time for an overhaul.

Man Troy you sure know how to bring bad news. I don't know about you tranny guys.

Its a bummer without 4th gear/overdrive.

Agreed the " stovepipe" is a common issue on this trans.

Thought a little humor wouldn't hurt anything! Although saving him some money might be worth a lot especially to him.

The "stovepipe" design has been changed from the 4T60E and really have not been a problem with the 4T65E. The 4T60E after about mid 96 year production was hardened which fixed the problem that the 4T60E's had.

I love all that good news! keeps me employed!! but It sucks for the other guys

I wouldnt condem it yet. go see if there are any codes stored. Could be a solenoid or wiring but with 175K its probably the splines
