I have a 2002 trans am with the radio controls on the steering wheel. The car was vandalized, a guy bought it to fix it up, lost intrest, and i purchased the car from him. When I bought the car it had a tape player in the car, but the dash was broke where the radio attaches to the dash, so i figure the tape player is something the previous owner put in.
My question is this, if I change the tape player for a cd player will the steering wheel controls still work? Can I put in a monsoon cd player? How can I tell if the monsoon was orig equipment in my car?
The tape player has a broken volume knob (the usual problem), and it isn't sending power to the power antenna (to make it go up and down). I can run power to the antenna to make it opperate, but the radio isn't doing that. Are these easy fixes or should I just put a different stereo in like im planning. I would prefer to not loose the steering wheel controls & thats why I was thinking about putting in a stock cd player or monsoon. Any info would be greatly appreciated

i dont think a new stereo would let the controls on steering wheel work..
just because wheni installed mine, i didnt see anything for "remote control" or anything such..

I am not too familiar with that model, so I don't know if you will be able to find a comparable model, but if you can't I've heard of people using this with success.

I hooks up to the steering wheel controls and changes it from a hardwired signal to an IR signal. It basically turns the controls into a programmable remote control. But you have to make sure the New stereo has provisions for a remote control.

I have heard of that device, just never seen one. I was considering going with an aftermarket radio (if I find one that I like, so far I haven't). Considered getting one with a flop out screen until I seen the prices & thought about smacking it everytime I hit 3rd gear. So I thought i'd see if anyone had one with the cd player in it & if it came with the steering wheel controls. I'm thinking I should be able to swap them, but thought maybe someone could verify this before I buy a used radio & wonder if its the radio or the compatibility issue. Appreciate the responses!

ok im going to go out on the limb but couldnt you just sell the one in there now on ebay and use the money you earn towards buying the one that came in it originally? i dont know anything about the newer trans ams but that makes the most since to me...

Yeah but it's hard to sell the stereo's that came with the tape decks on ebay, I was going to sell mine on there until I saw that none were selling because everyone was wanting to buy the ones with the cd player. I have seen people put in aftermarket stereo's and use the stereo controls with the device Live702 mentioned. That's what I was originally going to do, but I just got too lazy/cheap and said screw it. It's really not that big of a deal really. I mean, yeah the steering wheel controls are convienient and all, but you eventually forget they are there and get used to using the stereo controls themselves.
