My parents have a 2001 Malibu, gas cap was left off, therefore the check engine light came on. The owner's manual stated vehicle might need drove a short distance before light would go off, but the engine light won't go out.
Same vehicle apparently had keyless entry which we didn't get when buying it used, and door locks, security system always causing problems because everytime door locks are flipped it resets the code and there are several different codes that can be set. Advice????

I purchased a 2003 malibu with 20,000 miles. I drove one day, put gas in, and 5 minutes later the check engine light came on.. Well, apparently I didn't screw the cap on properly, the malibu has a sensitive emisions sensor, along with a special pressurized system (that's what I was told). Mine was corrected by turning the car off, rescrewing the gas cap and driving the car. After the next start up, I have never had a problem. Also you must shut car engine off when pumping gas.
the other issue you will have to find in the manual. my car has to be in park, then hold down the power lock on the driverside and listen for the chirps to let you know what setting it is on.
