:uhoh: It's done it a few times. It sounds like the blinker noise, but about twice as fast. Do we have a short somewhere? Everything else seems to work fine (except the first 2 air settings, but we mentioned that in another post). I can usually make the clicking stop by turning the blinkers on and off or pushing the hazard lights button a couple of times. The blinkers and hazard lights work just fine too. :shakehead

I'm not totally sure...but yeah, possibly a wiring issue. Or maybe just flexing plastic. i'd have to hear it to know for sure.

I encountered the same thing in my 98 Malibu a few years ago. I would get a turn signal clicking sound at random times. It turned out to be the turn signal switch on the steering column. I replaced it (it was very easy) and no more problem.

I'll try that. Thanks!

I had the same issue. Does it sound like your blinker turn signal is going off but faster? And does it happen infrequently? You felt that you remedied the problem by playing with the hardards button or your turn signals. If this sounds very familiar, you are in luck, it is your hazard lights switch. There was a factory recall on the switch and if you take your car in, it will be replaced for free. Here is the recall on that.
2000 Chevrolet Malibu Base Recall ID from NHTSA: 03V327000
Recall Date: 08/28/2003
Component: EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HAZARD FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS:SWITCH
Potential Units Affected: 670740
Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE HAZARD WARNING SWITCHES THAT MAY EXPERIENCE SOLDER JOINT CRACKING CAUSED BY RAPID TEMPERATURE TRANSITIONS AND THE SOLDERING PROCESS. IF SOLDER JOINT CRACKING OCCURS AND RESULTS IN AN OPEN CIRCUIT, THE TURN SIGNALS/HAZARD LAMPS BECOME INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE.
Defect Consequence: WHEN THE TURN SIGNALS ARE INOPERATIVE, THE DRIVER CANNOT USE THEM TO SIGNAL INTENT TO TURN THAT COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE HAZARD WARNING SWITCH. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438, PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668, OR OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537.

Is it too late for me to get mine fixed also, because I have a similiar problem. I have a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu, and sometimes both left and right blinkers work and sometimes they do not. I have to tinker with the emergency flasher in order to make them work.

No it is not too late. I'd recommend calling chevrolet and getting a number from them. I can't remember what they called it. But then you can take it into any dealer and they will fix it for you. We just got ours fixed a month or so ago. Completely free. The only conditions are like less than 10 years old, which yours is, or i think 150,000 miles. I'm not totally positive on the mileage, so you might want to double check. But yeah, call chevy, then take it in.

I had the same problem with 'weird clicking.' Signals and hazards were fully functional all the time, but I got a nasty, annoying intermittant click of varying frequency sounding from the hazard switch.
Solution: clean of replace multi-function switch
I cleaned mine out..
pop off plastic on top of steering column.
remove one 1/4" hex head screw and pull MFS straight up.
remove tiny torx screws to seperate MFS.. some of the contacts in mine were 'gunked up.' I just wiped everything with q-tips and now it works with no clicks.

I called the 1-800 number to Chevrolet and had GM to do an inquiry to see if my car is affected by the recall and mine isn't. So what do I do now? What could be the cause of this problem with my blinkers not functioning at times?

I had the same problem with my 2001, didn't know about the recall and pulled off the turn signal switch from a 98 Malibu to replace mine. It fixed it all right.

same problem as Negatoro
mine is a 2004 malibu classic (same instructions worked for me). The blinkers work fine when on same with the hazard, but when they are off, the blinker relay turns on and off randomly and rapidly. when I took off the plastic around the steering column, I could tap the MFS (black box with the blinker and wiper switches) to get it to blink rapidly. played with it a little to get it to quit. I'll need to do the same and wipe down the contacts later, but the MFS defiantly seems to be the issue.

I have the same problem with my 02. I have replaced the hazard switch and it is still doing it. So My next stop now is the multifunction switch. I got my hazard switch from the dealer for about $28 but a new multifunctional switch is about $200 so I will try and clean it first.
