Knocking From Axle

Hey all;
Along time ago I posted a thread about a knocking sound from my front axle. It does it when starting from a full stop, braking, and turning. Someone else had the same problem, and had a suggestion on what it would be. I can't find that thread and I dont remember on who it was by.
I bring this up again becuase about 2 nights ago I was driving and the knocking was going on when I hit bumps, turned every corner, or just moved the wheel. I was getting so pissed I punch it when some people started pissing me off while driving. I dropped it, floored it, and there was a loud BOOM. I though it was a backfire, but my car hasn't done that in a long time, and it sounded like it was came from the front. Afterward tho, it went back to the normal amount of knocking.
I've had this problem since I bought the car. It's gotten worse over the 2 years, but nothing has gone wrong because of it. Engine mounts are new.
What can that knocking be, and how much are we looking at?

Might be a bearing problem or a CV joint. Go under the car and inspect your CVboots. If one is torn then the chances are even higher that it's all coming from the CV joint or even the bearing. I had the same problem not too long ago on my other car. Now my eclipse has some knocking in the rear only for the first 20 seconds after I start driving the car and then it stops. That is only when the car hasn't been driven in hours and I start driving it for the first 20 seconds and never again for as long of a trip as you wish. I guess it's a lubrication issue with my car or the bearing is going out but yours sounds like one of the two for sure. CV joint or bearing.

So I went to my mechanic today to see what the deal is with this knocking. He got in the car and test drove it around. He made 360s and all the goodies, and he heard it. All he did the whole time was complain about how the car rattles so much from the motor mounts. Something in my dash is loud, and my sun roof is also rattles. My alternator belt squeels right now too. He said (in a thick European accent), "You have nothing to worry about. Get the rattling fixed first, then we'll be able to pin point the problem. It's fine and drivable."
Now, he didn't even lift the car up to see if anything was visable. I've trusted my mechanic, but after this one, I dont know now. Also, I took my Olds in there when I had my problem with it, and he hooked it up to the computer and found nothing wrong with anything. I did the ole ODBI jumper test, and got the code and then fixed that. Makes me think if I should trust people. My parents lef ttheir mechanic after they found out I can do everything he did, but cheaper and better. I dont know now.

yep I remember I had the same problem and thought I may have been my cv joint.....but it mysteriously dissapeared. So I never really looked into it since.

Could it be the stabalizer linkage?

i heard that it could be a upper or lower or both ball joints i know that mittsubishi had a recall on some 2g ball joints but thats just an opinion.

I don't know about the ball joint. When my driver side ball joint started to go it was more of a sqeaking not a knocking.

I got the whole control arm and ball joints fixed when i bought the car. I then took it to the dealer and they paid me for the work i had done by a mechanic. Lucky me. So, that's not the problem.
