Speedometer & Air Bag light - '98 Z71

I just recently purchased a '98 Silverado Z71. Of course, buying a used vehicle, you are buying someone else's old problems. One of which is a speedo that I don't believe is accurate. When it says I'm doing 55, it sure doesn't feel like it to me.

As of yet, I have not done anything to verify that it's off, but I know that it is. Once it is verified and I know how far off it is, what is the best way to go about resetting it so that it read correctly?

Also, my airbag light does it's normal flashing when I first start the truck, but then it stays on all the time. Does this mean that the whole system won't work or that it's going to blow up in my face when I rub a curb?

Thanks in advance.

Dave: On the speedo, you'll have to clock it with a know accurate speedo to see how far off it is and take it to a dealer for reprogramming. On the "air bag" light, it needs to be scanned for DTC's to determine the problem and fix according to the service manual. Good Luck..........Steve

I was just up at the body shop that my cousin works for having the hinge pins and outside door handle replaced on my driver's door. I talked to my cousin about the airbag light and he suggested that it might have been in a collision that caused the bags to pop and when the bags were replaced, something wasn't done properly. This idea might also be supported by the fact that while the truck is running, it will blow the turn signal fuse when you use the right turn signal... but ONLY when the truck is running.

The dealership I bought it from said they would pay to have the turn signal issue fixed, so I guess I'll be having that done in the near future... might also solve the airbag light issue.

Thanks for the info.
