1988 Dakota 4-speed auto to 3-speed conversion?

Just found out that there is a $900 cost difference between a 3-speed auto and 3-spd auto w/OD (4-spd). Does anyone know if it is possible to replace a 4-spd with a 3-spd in a 1988 Dakota without causing computer modules (if any) to loose their little minds?
