i have a 2000 grand am se v6 automatic tranny when you accelerate hard while tranny is in first gear you can hear a clanking or rattling noise coming from under drivers side front of car. when it shifts into 2nd you cant really hear it anymore. it kinda sounds like rods are knocking but it happens if you start up a hill hard and the car doesnt have high rpms. also when the car is cold and you first start it, it knocks alot but after 3-5 minutes it is quiet. if you rev up the engine it does not really get any louder. i am new to the forums your help is really appreciated

maybe your trany mount is broken and the trans bangs around it the mount when you acelerate hard.
THier is a rubber bushing in the mount(s) that can wear out.
If you need to replace them try to find Mounts with Urethane bushings, they last longer and squeek free[if you were hav squeeks]. Much tougher than OEM rubr mounts.

and welcome to AF.

thank you for the advice i had all the mounts checked. they are fine. they did suggest it might be the tourque converter. it really sounds like rods are knocking, that is the only way i can describe the noise, but it only happens in first gear. not rev or any other gears. and you have to be accelerating hard. any ideas? thanks
