My LS1 wouldn't find 170 with those gears...at least not stock.

i bet that was a rush......ya 150 is fast enough for me in a thirdgen..lol but in a fourth i would feal more comfortable at higher speeds
92zcamaroperson
02-25-2006, 12:39 PM
ive never been over 135. The speed rating for my tires is 140 and I dont want to push it. Aside from that there is just no reason for me to go any faster because the faster you go the less chance you have of living if you lose control.

I looked at it this way... I'm gonna die at 100+ anyways... so I want to die faster... I don't wanna suffer... lol...

i consistently bury the speedo on my trips back and forth from atlanta to auburn. I travel almost 140 miles in a little more than an hour, but it almost takes a whole tank of gas
Savage Messiah

I didn't know a 3.4 could go that fast :D

02-25-2006, 07:12 PM
haha me either.... its kinda weird seein the speedo at its max and knowing that you're still accelerating at some unknown speed
camaro guy
03-01-2006, 06:57 AM
Hahah i love that when your speedo is maxed and ya still pickin up speed... but anyway 170 meh i've gone faster than that, more around 210 sumthin and not on the highway, on the track, not that crazy... anyway, not your typical camaro either.... build strictly for racin' on the drag stip..

03-01-2006, 11:50 AM
I had my lt1 firebird to about 136-137 and that was pushing it, i dont think they can do more than 140
FormulaLT1
03-01-2006, 11:57 AM
They can but once you get deep into tripple digits it doesn't accelerate like it does down low. Thats all.
drvngstorm05
03-01-2006, 12:44 PM
well my speedo's last number is actually at 110... but i pull the 170 card because i started on the interstate way behind a buddy of mine who topped out his car at 160, and i flew past him like he was sitting still, and i was still pulling... all i could see is that my speedo needle was bending on the stop :icon16:
97cavalier
03-01-2006, 12:52 PM
can that mess up your speedometer when it hit that needle? can it thorw it off or any thing?

03-01-2006, 03:09 PM
on a 3rd gen the speedo should go back around.. ive had mine back around to like 40 before i put in my autometer cluster...
top speed is more about power then gearing... you can have 2.73 gears if your car does not have enough power you will never reach the redline.. my friend johns 94z28 auto with intake and exhaust barly hit 150.. it took forever to get up there

Your car should be in good tune to accurately measure top speed and if its your friend John that I talk to on aim all the time. He has had one problem after the other and went threw how many tranny and 2 engine I think. So I am not sure you can actually use that car to measure against all LT1 f-body's.
ridge_runner
03-01-2006, 03:33 PM
lol yea thats him... hes on his 3rd tranny and 2nd motor... the 2nd tranny was for the wrong year car and it wouldnt shift right... just put the new one in for his year and its all good.. ive rode in 3 lt1s and drivin one and thats just what i have experienced with no motor work.. just basic shit.. they will hit higher then 150 it will just take a long ass stretch to do it
FormulaLT1
03-01-2006, 03:44 PM
Most stock geared cars are like that though. If you have a tall gear such as 2.73's. like you said, Your not going to generate the power to top that out. and the resistance of pushing a nearly 2 tons vehicle with the air hitting the car near your peak horse. That takes time no matter what power plant your working with. Why else do you think they set land speed records in the desert on like 200 mile stretches.
ridge_runner
03-01-2006, 03:48 PM
well thats what i was saying... if you do not have the power its nearly impossible to top the car with the stock gear ratio unless you have like a 5 mile stretch
cuda_dude
03-01-2006, 03:52 PM
Hm...well i guess my car must have the power then.... I hit 160 in less than 2 miles

your car is also modded and is lighter then a 4th gen and is a 6 speed.. the autos shift into overdrive before 140 i think

very true, but my drag coefficient is about a .86 compared to 4th gens which i believe is about .28 or so... i may be wrong but i do know 4th gens are definately more aerodynamic...

The difference in weight is not dramatic either. My cars curb weight listed on the reg is like 3300 something. Thats right around what 3rd gens weigh.

and your car is moddedWhich auto was this done in?. The one that was not shifting correctly?, cause the 4L60-E's are not as far behind the sticks on top end as your making it sound Ridge.

the weight didnt help out top end the weight helped getting it up to speed faster down low

no the one that wouldnt shift correctly wouldnt shift out of 2nd.. from what i remember it took him a while to get up to 150 and i remember it shifting into od.. the auto drops you down in the rpm more then the 6 speed.. it has 2 less gears to make up for
and this was b4 all the problems when it was stock

4l60-e 1st- 3.06/2nd-1.62/ 3rd-1.00/4th-0.70
T56 1994+ 1st-2.66/2nd-1.78/3rd-1.30/4th-1.00/5th-0.74/6th-0.50
As you can see where most T56's top out is 5th, which is nearly identical to 4th gear on a auto (only higher slightly). So the 3rd to 4th shift of the auto vs the 4th - 5th shift of a t56 is basically as close as you can get with a stick vs auto.

i kept forgetting what the gear ratio was in 5th... man, my 5th now tops out at 140, with the 4.11's
drvngstorm05
03-01-2006, 05:08 PM
ok so now that i know 5th gear ratio, then i was really goin about 168, not 170... cuz i was spinning 6500 rpm... with the 3.42's that is

lol you could try readin the thread man... i started out way behind a friend who topped out his car at 160, and i went past him like he was sittin still... so i knew i was about 170 or so... then john gave the gear ratios and i found out that i was really goin about 168
