Hi I am new, ummm I dont know if im the only girl here or what but maybe some of you guys might be able to help me.

I have a 95 eagle talon non turbo. I came home from work and turned the car off then about an hour later got in the car to go somewhere else, the car would not start....It would turn over but not fire......Had to have it towed to the garage ....after 1 day they called me back and said the ems or the main computer was out on it. that would cost about 805.00 after parts and labor. Then they called me back and said the cranck shaft sensor was bad ok thats an extra 179 or something like that with a grand total of 990.00 ok the next day they called me back and said they must of got a faulty box and had to get another one cause it wouldnt start again. So they called me back again today and said they got another box but have to have it towed somewhere else to get it programed thats another 100 so now the grand total is 1090. What the Heck.....Do you think I have got ripped off or what?

Any advice would be appreciated

it could be just about anything, fuel pump/filter, spark plug/coil/wires. or something like that. I have had problems like this before, normally if it is turning over it is NOT a dead battery

My daughters 98 Eclipse did the same thing. It turned out to be the middle fuel pump relay. I don't know if your 95 is the same. On hers there were 3 square black relays on the firewall -drivers side. If the relay in the middle is bad it will cut the ignition. This was a $15 part but it took me a long time to figure out what was wrong. The local Mitusbishi garage said without looking at it that it was probably the ECM. The relay is easy to check. Just look in a Haynes motor manual and it gives you the instructions. A quick way to check it is to switch the relay with the one beside it and see if the car starts. Mine started but wouldn't run right without replacing the bad relay.

definately are shafting you.

I've seen it before. Everytime my sister takes her car in for inspection they pull crap like that. Then I or my dad go in to look at it and "they must have measured wrong"

Don't let them screw you over. Even if you have no experience with cars you can change the ecu (it's really simple), and it's cheap to get another one. Take a friend to a junk yard (it will save oyu alot of money)

If you don't want to do the work then at least have it towed somewhere else and get a second opinion.

I will never take my car to a garage, mostly because of stupid shit like that. $1100 for a bad ECU and CAS? Thats bullshit, you can buy the parts and do it yourself for like $150 and a half hour of time. Are you good with turning a wrench or do you know someone who is? This site, a Haynes manual, and a little elbow grease will save you thousands.... litterally.

This is why I've spent over 2 1/2 years of my life learning how to do everything on my car myself. Girliebomb, I would file a complaint with the BBB if they're listed with them. But seriously, why is there no system in place to make shops not do this? What's stopping them from telling every single person that comes in there's $1200 worth of repair work when really the battery cable just came off? There should be random state inspections where they send in a car and see if they are honest. If they're not more than three times-shop licence gone forever and all employees caught trying to defraud customers taken to jail and never allowed to be a mechanic again-problem solved.

Haha yeah that would be cool and I am deffinatly in if it involves giving a**hole mechanics what they deserve. However, many people that go to shops are frequent customers there. So mechanics start to learn what the people know and what they don't know. It is probably the frequent customers that get ripped off more often than the random ones. However, I would like to take my car to a shop one day (while knowing whats wrong with it) and see what they tell me. :evillol:

Check spark, fuel, and air. The shop might not be wrong about what the problem is, but they're overcharging.

The following is IIRC, and maybe only for CA. Before they perform work they have to quote you a price and have you sign off. If the work goes over the price of the quote, you get a call. If the work is under the quote, you get the difference returned to you. This doesn't stop shady shit like listing two mechanics necessary for an easy job, and essentially double-billing for labor. If they don't play nice, your other option is to report them to the BBB like Nayr said.

Even if you don't feel comfortable doing the work yourself, have the car towed to another shop who will treat you a little more fairly. But, like the guys said, it's cheapest to DIY.

BTW, I agree with your idea Nayr.

Edit>> Women get the shaft talking to mechanics. Bring your dad/bf/etc. They only try to jerk you around if they think they can get away with it.

Thanks. Yeah, I thought it was a good one. It always pisses me off when they pull that sh*t on my gf (hopfully getting back together soon :) :) ). They do it to guys too though. I was charged like $600+ for a dead battery and alternator. And $1200 when I got water in the engine. And $120 for spark plug wires...
