The later Tamiya F1 cars are excellent kits, quite easy to build and lots of detail upgrade potential. I recently did the Benetton B192 straight out of the box and really enjoyed it.

Enjoy your build, I'm sure we all will too - will inspire me to dig out my 107!

That Benetton was what I choosed from.. I choosed between the Jordan 191 (to many are building that one at the moment), Benetton B192 and this one.. due to the nice paint scheme this clearly was the right one for me :D

First update.. how about that :D
Okey.. this is just a little experiment I have tested..
I took a roll of masking tape.. cutted it into strips and then layed it down on the underchassis to replicate CF since I don´t have any of the SAS or Studio27 CF.. how does it look? :)

Before:

After:

http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/7629/picture0694uo.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

I also sanded the wheels..

That´s it.. hope you like it! :)

That model cannot be out of the box, the camel decals are not in my, where did you get them from?

I don't want to hijack this thread! But the Camel decals came from F1 Specialties and are excellent. Maybe I'll put up a "Completed" thread for the Benetton, it can also be seen on F1M.

Hey Rickard, interesting idea with the masking tape, but carbon fibre would be a far less noticable effect at this scale - it has a very fine "weave". Some use the technique of spraying though a mesh - there's a tutorial on the Tamiya site.

Why are everybody complaining about the cf? :P to me it looks good.. In the picture I had to use the light to make the CF even appear.. you can barely see it..

That cf replication doesnt look good at all. Just use semi gloss black if you cant afford cf decals.

No problem. I am all for scratchbuilding and improvising to save money, but don't say we didn't warn you about it.

What about using womens nylon hoisery as the template for cf weave pattern? I see that used regularly and think that looks pretty good. Especially after highlights and using your tinted clear coats. I know a lot of Motor cycle modellers use it and Rally guys use it inside the cars.

Try shooting light gunmetal through a mesh instead. Although the wrong pattern it adds a lot I think. The way you did it it has to have narrower tape strips and I don't know if it's worth the work.

I will try this later on today.. BUT since itīs a 1/20 scale car.. donīt you yhink I should use another kind of mesh that is a little "bigger" if you know what I mean?

i agree with proosen the gap between the strips is to big,it is not the proper scale, check up reference photos and you will see the difference.Spray through a mesh if you dont want to spend money on CF decals.

here is a picture of the chassis with the mesh I found.. the holes in the mesh is approx 1x1 mm wide.. I think it will work, because of the scale.. And if it looks good I will do the same on the top side of the chassis..

I will paint it tonight.. tell me what you think..

I actually think it might be a tad to big, 1mm will be 20 mm in real life and that's to big. I you can find anything smaller, say 0,5mm it should look better.
I used a fabric of nylon (tyll om du frågar i tygaffären) with about 0,3mm which actually is a little big in 1/24 but it works and it will work even better in 1/20.
Be carefull when you spray, just mist the paint on.

Good luck!

Thanks.. But I have been searching for hours and hours now.. I can´t find ANY useful ref. pics.. Does ANYBODY know if both the rear and front arms are CF?

Big Kahuna

Same deal as that J191 with cf on the suspension arms. They did not use cf on suspension arms till about mid 90's. This one had anodozed alloy steel arms. I'd use Humbrol Satin Coal Black for these arms. Very nice sheen.

If you want to keep it cheap try a Nylon stocking it has a fine pattern

Ok.. I sprayed the chassis now.. but the mesh got a little bit stuck.. so there are some markings after that.. but you can´t basiclly see anything.. anyway.. I liked the result.. but for this one.. I´m gonna keep it with mest underside and the tape edition on top.. I just layed done a darker layer of it ontop so you barely see thoose (\\\\\\\) if you know what I mean..
