Odd noise from my 2000 SH

I just got this car a couple weeks ago and it makes a funny noise when you first take off after after initial start up. It is kind of hard to describe this noise. It is not really a growl but more like a whine. It only last about a second then quits. It does not matter if you are going forward or in reverse. The clutch can be engaged or disengaged. Everything is stock. No check engine lights. No other noises any other time no matter how fast or slow you are driving.

I am the proud owner of a 2001 SH. It has 58k miles on it, and pretty much from the day I bought the car. It has that same hollow howl/whine noise when I come out of first gear, and yes in reverse too. (ever notice a funny squeak? Like the motor mounts/tranny mounts may be shot too?) Recently (03/03) my car broke down on the way home from work. No compression, and no spark. The mechanic who took the valve cover off said it looked like something had torn through the top of the timing belt. It is at the dealer now, and I will keep posted the info that I get back from the dealer. as to what happend, and I will also have them look into that suspicious noise. This way here maybe you guys can avoid the breakdown. Hopefully these repairs will be covered under warranty.

I have a 1998 Honda Prelude Type SH and I have the same exact problem. Whenever I take off from the initial take off it makes a whining vibrating noise. I'm still wondering what it is. My friend who checked it out said it might be something from the tranny or the ball point bearings. Have you guys discovered what's wrong with your cars? I'm guessing it's something with the ATTS.

...so I got off the phone with the various departments at Honda... the timing belt let go. There was a screw/bolt that holds the timing cover on, that backed out, and the head of the bolt started carving a groove in the top of the belt until it finally malfunctioned. They are also giving me $hit about the aftermarket cold-air intake. Which was on the car when I bought it used certified pre-owned.THEY HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER!!!! ooh, and here is the kicker. The dealer I bought the car from is now saying that they didn't have it on the car when they sold it to me, that I made the mod to the car after I purchased. SO yeah another great customer service job from the great Honda Corp. awful sad too. I really love my lude! lude enthusiasts make sure on that timing belt cover... don't want you guys having any issues like this.... still not to sure on if it was the reason there is that hollow howling, when letting out the clutch in 1st gear. My gut thinks throw outbearing, or warped flywheel, pressurplate.

My SH does the same thing. I think it has something to do with the computer controlled clutches that work the ATTS. my bet is that it's nothing to worry about.

hey, i have a 98 base model and it makes the same sound. Mine only happens when i first start the care up and start moving. I've had it for 2 years and it hasn't been related to any trouble i've had.

I drive a 1998 Prelude Type SH with almost 117k and recently when I drove it something weird happened with my ATTS. I was making a U-Turn behind this car in front of me so I was on first about to shift to second, but then all of a sudden my car started jolting forward and back as if something was holding it back. Just as if you're pressing the gas, but you're going nowhere. It was making a weird grinding noise as if it was pounding against something. My ATTS light lit up once that happened and it stayed lit for the reminder of the time. So after 20 seconds the grinding stopped and then the ATTS light stayed on and then I decided to pull over to check out what’s wrong. I turned off the engine and when I turned it back on the ATTS light turned off. I checked the engine bay and under the car to see if there was any leaking, but there wasn’t any. Do you guys think something is wrong with my ATTS? Any help is appreciated.

My guess is that the angle of the wheel and the amount of throttle/rpm caused some type of hiccup with the computer that controls the clutches in the ATTS unit. Since your light went off and the noise/vibrations have stopped, I wouldn't worry about it until it happens again.
