question about my remote

How would i know if my car came equipped with an alarm, my car has the little spot on the front of the dash where the light would be for an alarm and the little bump that would look like the light itself, but i cant tell if theres a bulb in there or if its just a plastic cover where there would be an alarm. my keyless entry remote that was with the car when i bought it only had the three buttions, lock unlock and trunk release, it diddnt have a panic buttion, but the remote never worked, so it got me thinking, since its a used car, could the previous owner just have bought the wrong remote? if anyone needs to know my vin # or the model of the remote if thats helpful. thanks in advance! p.s. i've tried reprogramming the remote SEVERAL times already, even the dealer tried, it would enter the programming mode, but diddnt work still. i put a fresh battery in the remote too. the car's a 98 GTP if you diddnt see in the pic

Hey Mike, get me the last 8 digits of your Vin, and I can tell you.

Mike, your car has remote entry, but not anti-theft, that's why you have a 3 button transmitter, not a 4-button. The correct number transmitter for your vehicle is 10246216.

10246215 and 10246216 are interchangeable.

The remotes have identical circuit boards inside, and the "3 button" remote has a 4th button circuit, which just doesn't have a panic button on the case to be used.

ohh ok, thanks for checking up on that for me, i was thinking of just getting a new remote to see if that works, if not i know where the recever is, i remember hearing that its behind the instrument cluster pannel, but if it enters programming mode then wouldnt that mean the receiver is good then still or not?

If you enter programming mode, the receiver is functional.

I didn't know that you can have anti-theft (the kind with siren sound when someone pull the door handle without the key?) on GM cars. Because my 2 GM cars all have the wordings of "PASSKEY" and "anti-theft content" which I think mean for the Delco radio, I am getting the standard 20% discount off my comprehensive insurance policy for having "anti-theft devices"...

So is this 4th "anti-theft" button just adding an annoying siren to our car? What other extra protection you get out of it?

The 4th button - Panic causes the horn to blow at one second intervals when pressed and the headlights and backup lights will flash at the same time.

A lot of Grand Prixs have the BCM-4 (Level 4) which has a shock sensor. An impact or movement after arming will cause the horn to sound off and the lights to flash.

I'm not sure whether all GTs or which year models have the shock sensor but a lot do. I've worked with GT owners in the past that had it installed from the factory which means that they had the BCM-4. Just about all GTPs are supposed to have it.

The way to tell is to open the small access cover at the left hand side of the dashboard after you open the door. Look for something that looks like a relay or module. It will have a sensitivity knob for adjustment located on it. The body control module and daytime running lights module (DRL) is right next to it in the same area.

SNKPWR, give me the last 8 digits of your vin and I can tell you. Bob is correct in that if the car came factory with the anti-theft, it will have a different controller with a sensitivity adjustment, and a 4 button remote. Without anti-theft they come with a 3 button remote.

I have a 2000GT and had to adjust this yesterday. Can't speak for older models, but the 2000 has nothing inside that access cover. The owner's manual finally told me something useful though. There's a fuse in the fuse panel inside the glove box called MALL PGM. Remove this fuse and then turn the key to ACC (Turn back towards driver one notch). The sensitivity of the shock sensor is then controlled by turning the parking lights on and off. Each time this is done a different # of chimes is played. Each chime count references a different sensitivity from high all the way down to turning off the theft-alarm all together.

When done, just turn the ignition back off and replce the fuse. The manual had instruction for all sorts of settings, like length of dome light bening on after closing doors, etc. Most useful information in one of those I've ever found.

Your car comes with the 4 button remote, although it doesn't specify in the GM computer if it has the anti-theft package. It may have become standard equipment in the 02 model year, and that's why it doesn't list the option code for anti-theft(UA0) or keyless entry(AU0).

hey rich,
are you sure that is the only number that will work on his car? the four button remote is the exact same i think, and i have heard of guys using it and just not being able to use the 4th button. the reason i ask is because there is a truckload of them on ebay, #10335582, so they are cheaper too. i have only found 2 of the other so far. i was just checking- maybe will save this guy some money.

I've heard the 3-buttons share the same circuit board, so it would probably work. I've never tried it, so I didn't want to give possible bogus info. I was basically just letting him know that his OEM one was a 4 button.

with regard to the bolded phrases:

i had nothing inside that acces panel either, other than the heat sink for the DRL, which i had already disconnected right after i got the car last month...

secondly, i read the owners manual section on this, and the number of chimes has nothing to do with the sensitivity of the anti-theft, at least not on 02's....mine has the anti-theft function, but only in that if i activate it, it sets with the door locks, and goes off (horn and lights) if someone opens a door or the trunk w/out the key or remote...that being said, the only "adjustment" options outlined in the owners manual were to turn the function on and off...

Have you tried tapping on a window with a key with the anti-theft enabled to see if the sharp sound created causes the alarm to go off. If it doesn't, your car doesnt have a shock sensor, and the alarm is only activated if a door is opened through the dome lamp circuit.

hmm, so should i just go with the 3 buttion remote just to be sure it will work?

That's what I would do Mike, but I do believe the 4-button will work if you can't find a 3-button.
