That weird syrup smell, who knows what causes it ??

I KNOW I CAN NOT BE ALONE ON THIS, BECAUSE THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE BEEN IN A PONTIAC AND SMELLED THAT SYRUP SMELL !! Basically it is starting to happen in my 92 FireBird... What is the cause of this ?? Do I need to change the heater core ?? If not what do I need to do to get it fixed... Thanks for any reply and help..

Yup. The sweet smell of hot antifreeze. Heater core's way of sayin' bye-bye.

I've had two Pontiacs, one a 89 grand prix and the other an 88 firebird. Both will have a rotten egg smell every once in awhile. Got any clue what that is!? lol All guages are fine when it happens, all fluids in motor and tranny have been changed in both cars, still smells once in awhile. Its not often.

Emissions related. Usually the cats. Doesn't mean they're on the way out..... they're just not getting hot enough during those "smelly periods".

How many miles on the cats in both those cars?

Yeah, I just had some new cats put in, now I get a egg smell, but my buddy has a Camaro SS and said he got the same thing when he upgraded his exhaust.
And my wife's Malibu is getting that pecan syrup smell to it though. I guess I'll need to expect a heater core replacement soon.
Eggs...syrup...what problems smell like bacon and pancakes??? Too bad these problems don't smell like T-bone steak dinner instead.

well..the transmission fluid smells..chestnutty... sort of.

It sounds like burnt antifreeze. It could be the heater core. When do you smell it? When the heater is on? When you step outside of the car? Look by your valve covers and see if you can locate any standing antifreeze. If you see it by the valve covers it could be a head gasket.

Throw a tube of "Aluma-Seal" in there and see if it doesn't take care of it. Heater cores tend to "seep" before they take a big dump. Adding the stop-leak can seal it up for another year or two... I say "Aluma-Seal" because it seems to work better than anything else we've tried on heater cores.
