1989 Camaro ignition issue

I have an '89 Camaro that I just recently purchased. every so often when I go to turn the ignition, nothing will happen. I have interior lights and radio but no ignition. I want to believe that the issue lies within the coded key but am not sure. I have tried checking the shift selector wiring and everything seems to be in order. Has anyone had this problem? If, so is there a fix besides replacing the ignition switch?

Sounds like the switch IS your problem, especially if you use your tilt steering alot.
It would still crank with a VATS problem

Im not shure about that wright, I have an 89 camaro aswell and when my vats used to act up, it wouldnt let the engine crank at all...tried to start the car and all I heard was a "click/tick" sound and then nothing...
I got the bypass module from ecklerscamaro and I havent had that problem since, so I know it was the vats and not the switch.
I know you know your stuff, but I have to disagree with you on this one.

A security override module from ecklerscamaro.com will solve your problem, it did for me:grinyes:

Dunno what the hell I was thinking there. For some reason i thought It just killed off spark and fuel grounding. My bad.

Thanks for all of the help. I am going to try the security bypass from ecklers and see if that works. I don't think its VATS because its intermitant. And when I let it sit for a few minutes then the engine cranks. :banghead:

When the problem occurs, the only thing I can suggest is try to see if you have battery voltage on the S terminal of the starter solenoid. I know it's a tight to get in there, but atleast that will help nail down if it's a ignition switch (still sticking to my guns on that one) or a faulty winding in the solenoid.

Brilliant! I will try that this weekend when I can get under the car. Thanks!

I really do think its the VATS...and after the above statement by hugger, Im certain that the problem is the VATS, I had to deal with if for several months before I found out what it was for shure...but now when I think back, I just kick myself because it was so obvious...why didnt I figure it out sooner?!?:banghead:
