Auto window issues

This morning, after getting my drive-thru breakfast, I pressed the button to roll up the window on the driver's side of my 1998 Malibu. It's been slow lately, but this time, it went up, clicked several times, and now won't budge. In fact, when I press the button, the lights momentarily dim, but the window stays put.

Anyone got a clue on what happened?

Last month I had the same issue with my 98 Malibu. I replaced the master window switch on the driver's side and it corrected the problem.

I had a similar problem but my window stayed down. I took off the door panel, and realized the motor wasnt fully in place. Tapped it with a soft hammer and was good as new. just and idea.

A couple of quick questions for you, GYLPBU. How did you know it was the switch and not the motor? Where did you buy a switch?

Thanks for the help!

knowlegeable1, how did you get the door panel off? I have only seen on hex screw in the door handle, but nothing else. Do I just pull really hard?

Thanks for the help!

If I repeatedly tapped on the switch with some force and it would eventually get the window to go up or down a little bit. That is how I knew it was the switch. I ordered a new switch at www.gmpartsdirect.com, they had the best price. The part number is 22706008. You can also order the switch from www.partsdirect.com or www.autozone.com. But of course make sure that is the problem and not the window motor before you spend the money.

I mean www.partsamerica.com, not www.partsdirect.com

Well, when I push the switch, NOTHING happens. It doesn't budge. It rolled up just fine a couple days ago, but once it hit the top, the door 'clicked' several times (maybe six times rapidly), and it stopped working altogether.

The door panel comes off pretty easy... Yes, that hex screw comes out, then, start working the little clips out from one corner, use the tool if you have it, or one of those Big BBQ 2 pronged forks works well. Undo them all and the panel comes off, be carefull, with the switches since the wires are still connected... Pretty easy once you start getting into it.

That is pretty much it, but there are three screws that need to come out.

From another post I made about this:
Remove one torx screw from behind the door opener, and two bolts from under the small removeable cover behind the door handle/hand hold. Start at the upper corner of the door by the side view mirror. Slip a non-metallic pry bar behind the door panel and pry it free. Work your way down and around the bottom and to the back of the door. Then lift the panel off of the window ledge. Be sure not to pull the panel too far away from the door before removing the harnesses for the power items.

I discovered those two screws under the door handle the hard way. :) Anyway, the problem was actually the window lift motor. I got a replacement for $60 at Advance Auto Parts and installed it. Man... getting the original out and the new one in was a PAIN. I wish they had screws or something holding them in place. I actually wound up snapping one of the black, plastic tabs that held it in place.

Thankfully, it seems the remaining two tabs are still sufficient to hold it firm. Thanks to everyone who offered advice!!!!!
