Problems Changing Gears

I just bought an 02 Jetta yesterday and my step dad noticed today when he drove it that when I stop or slow down as soon as I begin to accelerate when the car shifts to second gear it jumps or skips but only second gear and when I put it in manual to change gears then it don't jump in second anymore it jumps going to 3rd. Anybody got any idea what's wrong? Need to know asap.
