Ferrari F40

How much detail does the Tamiya F40 model have? I know it has an engine but is it just a half static engine or a full detailed engine like you'd find in a Revell or AMT kit? How rare is the kit and how much would you expect to pay for one? Thanks for any input.

Great engine detail. Not too rare. You would pay around anywhere from $20-40. I am not sure about the Revell kit, so I cannot compare it to it.

Static is like Maisto diecast junk, or ..more or less a curbside. No real engine detail, maybe that shit molded onto the chassis.

I`ll agree that it is pretty well detailed, and a decent kit. Personally, I felt the Fujimi kit is a bit more accurate and looks more convincing when finished. If I was looking for an F40 kit, that would be it.

Wow thanks for all the help. Much appreciated, I've decided to get the F40 next for a OOB build to try and get back into my other models. I just got a Tamiya AMG 600SEL sedan yesterday, I'm looking for some decent sized wheels if anyone has some for sale. OK, so it's a late reply (I've been out of town), but I figured I could offer something on this one.

The Tamiya F40 is a great kit- but it does need a bit of work. It's not quite an 'instant masterpiece, just shake box' build like the Enzo. For a list of my gripes, and how to correct them, check out my F40 build (link in my sig).

As for references, I doubt there's another car as well documented on the web as the F40. Takes a bit of looking, but there's alot out there.

is the wiring of the 288GTo's engine anything like how it is in the F40?
from what i can see, the plug cords in the F40 run to plugs set in the intake "rig" above it.
does the 288 do the same thing?
i can for the life of me find a picture of a 288 engine out of the car.

The Revell kit does have a correct muffler/resonator- it's on one of the black sprues, not the silver. As for the manifolds themselves, I don't think that was a correct configuration on the 288, either. I'm pretty sure the 288, like the F40, had equal length pipes leading to the correlators and the turbines. Fujimi is guilty of this simplification on both their F40 and 288 kits.

The F40 was one of the first Ferrari's built with electronic ignition. The spark plug wires lead to the coil packs, which were mounted on brackets attatched to the intake manifolds. Other Ferrari's contemporary to the 288 (328, Testarossa) had conventional ignition systems (distributors). I don't have any pics, but I wouldn't be surprized if the 288 has a 4 contact distributor on the end of a camshaft on each cylinder bank, like on the 328.
