Hi guys!. I have a question about a '92 Camaro Rs V8.
When I turn the key off I hear a humming/buzzing from the fuel tank. I disconnect the bat. and it stops. I connected the bat. back up and it still drains the bat. dead. I have tried pulling fuses to make it stop, but no luck there. It just started a couple of weeks ago. I replaced the fuel pump about 3 years ago. Could it be bad already? I have heard everything from the relay to the pump itself being bad. When I jump the car off, it starts up fine. It runs fine, no sputtering, rough idling or anything. Any opinions or suggestions would be very appreciative right now as I am at a dead end. I am not ready to spend another $500 putting another pump on.

That sound you're hearing is the pump priming, it's normal(and aftermarket pumps are considerably louder than stock) I doubt it's the fuel pump if it starts...I would take a closer look at your battery. Test the battery when you jump it, if it starts to lose volts then it could be your alternator.

the pump won't be priming when you "turn the key off"

It still primes if it's turned in the ignition.

It only primes when the key is turned ahead, prior to starting the car, not when turning the car off. It sounds like his problem is that the pump will not turn off?

the pump don't keep on priming till the batter is dead, it might run for about no more than 30sec after the car is shut off but that is it. Like cuda said, you have a problem with your pump not shuting off. So did you try to pull the fuel pump fuse and then check to see if you still here it.

fuel pump fuse is under the hood on the right side fender wall behind the battery.

does your hatch function properly, in my last camaro the hatch motor got messed up and it would always try to pull thye hatch down and when the car shuts off you could hear it and it could be mistaken for a fuel pump.

Yes, the fuel pump is supposed to run after the car is shut off, for about 2 seconds, just like when the key is switched on.
Turn the key on and listen for the pump, it should run for 2 seconds and stop. If it keeps going, the relay is stuck and that is why it keeps running after you shut the car off.

Thanks for all the info. sorry i havent responded sooner. I have not tried the fuse under the hood. will try. and the motor for the hatch works fine, just the hydraulics dont work. I listened for it to prime when i turn the key on. thats fine, it does that and shuts off. i can take the key outta the switch and still hear the humming. and btw, please bear with me, i am a woman, so if i sound like i dont know what i am talking about, i probably dont. LOL. But thank again.

If the struts are not holding the hatch up and you have the pull down motor hatch, get new struts on the hatch ASAP. Bad struts will kill the pull down motor & housing.

Is the humming sound the same as when you turn the key on and the pump primes?

No its a different sound. when the car is off, it just a low hum. another question though, if it is the relay is that also located in the tank?

Relay is in the engine bay, driver's side right up by the brake booster, there's 3 of relays there, usually the center one is for the fuel pump.

I would really try to get an ear closer to the back of the hatch area, it's really starting to sound like the hatch motor. Anyone know where the fuse is for it so she can pull it and see if that's it?
