99 Corolla rubber door guards?

My wife's Corolla has rubber door guards (not sure if that is the right term) that are deterioting to the point where they look like they are all melted and stuck to the door. Any advice on how to get them off? Goo-off? or will that strip the paint too. Sorry if this has been asked before.
