a few days ago i was driving for a couple of hours then i went through a town with my friend next to me and we were stopped at a stop light next to each other...we raced and i won at both lights...he has an 01 escort and i have a 92 tsi so it was obvious who would win....anyways...right after the second race i hit the highway and about a mile down the road my car made a wheezy noise then started blowin white smoke out the exhaust and from under the hood....i pushed in the clutch and it died and i pulled over....i didnt hear any knocks or anything...i thought that it was a head gasket for awhile but all my coolant is still there....it blew oil everywhere down somewhere by the alternator....on that corner of the motor anyways....i havnt tried to start it since it happened....i took off my pully cover and my timing belt was loose...it had about 3/4 in of play between the pullys...anybody have any idea what happened?...im stuck...

Does it run at all or even turn over? Have you checked out your turbo yet? I'd check it for shaft play.

Whatever it is, it dosn't sound good...

sounds like the timing belt skipped. It shouldn't have any play whatsoever. 99% percent if this is the case you bent some valves, major work on that car is needed.

If the timing skipped why would he be burning coolant(white smoke) and have massive oil loss?

But he said that all the coolant was still in the car?

When white smoke is coms BILLOWING out the exhaust, it means a blown head gasket. Check the oil. See if there is any coolant in there. If not it might be signs of a bad turbo.

burning coolant could be 3 things in his car, 1. head gasket failure, 2.cracked head, and 3. Blown turbo(blowing cooland straight into exhaust)

 Holy fuck dude.

Heres what I am thinking: your turbo took a huge shit. Could it be that the oil return got a hole in it or blew off spraying the oil all over, then the turbo burning up without lubrication and thus sending coolant into the engine? The turbo shitting out wouldn't jump the timing though. Maybe blew the tensioner? I dont know about that.

EDIT: After seeing pr_ricer's post, a cracked head could definately be a possibility, probably the culprit actually. The crack would cause the engine to burn coolant, also that maybe what happened with the oil, just came out the crack. When the head got mis-shapen from the crack, that could also have caused the cam gears to move causing the slack.

You should just give the car to me. ;)

Holy shit, no... Not with 220k miles on it and a possible cracked head/blown motor... Maybe 400... 500... Good luck with it.

Is it AWD? I think you'd be doing pretty good to get $500 for it.

First, don't just assume it's a cracked head. Do a damn compression test!! They are so easy to do and can show so much about the engine's condition. Sorry but nobody ever tells anyone to do one.
