how come a 351 weighs less than a 4.6 when the 351 is iron block and the 4.6 is alloy? don't make sense! cams, extra valves etc can't weigh that much.
i'm buying a crate engine soon and these are the main contenders. any help or advice apreciated.

They sure can weigh that much. Have you ever seen how big a 4.6 engine is? If so there should be no doubt in your mind that it could weigh that much.

yeah while they dont displace as much, they are quite large. the 351 is a much more compact engine.
the alumium block 4.6l engine doesnt weigh much though...

Ture the blocks can be verry light. The 01 Cobra block is only 80lbs.

you are buying the engine from fordracing right? one thing that might be helpful is to go to fordracingparts.com and look at the engines, theres quite a lot of info on them.

i read up on the 4.6 before my first post but the info isn't that comprehensive. also, i'm looking for the views of owners on tuning, reliability etc. Does anyone on here know about 90 versus 180 degree crankshafts???
