99 4 door LX Brake comes on while shifting

Recently sometimes when I starting off and shifting into either 1st or 2nd gear my brake light comes on. My clutch in depressed part way but my brake isn't on. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

The brake light switch needs adjustment.

1. Locate the switch near the top and the brake pedal and disconnect the electrical connecter.
2. Loosen the switch lock nut.
3. Turn the brake light switch until it just touches the brake pedal.
4. Turn the brake light switch clockwise 1/2 turn more then lock the lock nut.

check brake fluid in my 99 escort the master brake cyl and clutch cyl are the same unit and seeing how the brake light comes on may be telling you that something is wrong with the system.

I thought it was about the Stop Light being the brake light. Now after reading some posts I realize we are talking about the brake icon on the instrument panel. Can someone tell me which it is?

I think it is referring to the light for the master cylinder... fluid is low.
