Normally a loose/cracked flywheel/converter would make more of a knocking sound than a ticking, and would tend to dissapear when you put it in gear. And those sounds are sometimes intermittent and not in time with the rpm. If it is the exhaust, like you said in an earlier post, you could tell by putting it in gear, locking the brakes, and gas on it. If its exhaust it should get louder. You could try partially blocking the exhaust and doing this too. If you have a stethescope, or the old iron rod or long screwdriver trick, you can listen around on the engine, pinpoint the noise, and tell if its exhaust or not. You wont hear the exhaust through the scope, or the rod. Good luck.

PS: you got me curious about the marks on the flywheel, id have to see that?
