I have a 99 olds intrigue that broke down on me last week. It actually broke down on a friend of mines while driving the car. It made a sound like a bell then cut off and after several attempts at getting it started the car ran for about a block before it cut off again. My car had no serious problems until about 2 months ago when out of nowhere it would not start. Whenever you would try to start the car it would make a weird cranking noise which I was told that it could be the starter. I replaced the starter and still the car would not budge. I took it to a shop where I was told that I need a head gasket. I got that done and some other misc. work and the car broke down the next day after i bought it home from this shop. It was said that I needed a new battery so I replaced that right away. After replacing the battery the car would still continue to cut off. Within a day or two someone replaced a wire which they said was faulting after the shop did work on the car replacing the head gasket. The check engine and anti-lock brake lights would stay on ever since the car came back from the shop. I have to get it towed to a mechanic or shop as soon as possible. Is it worth getting fixed or what? This is my first car that i bought from an auction last year. It now has 140,000 plus miles. I was also told that the transmission was slipping. The car use to make a loud noise once it got up to 35 miles per hour. That also started 2-3 months ago. Anyone have any ideas of what is going on?

After all the guessing games, does your mechanic have his boat paid off????
it seems like whoever is workign on your car is simply guessing at what is wrong with your car. As soon as you mentioned that your car cutoff while driving, my immediate thought was either the igniton module or the crankshaft sensor, both are known problems with the Intrigue. They cause the symptoms you described.
The check engine light is an emission issue. You can go to Advance Auto parts store and have them read the code and post it on here.
I know a number of Intrigue owners have had the wheels sensors replaced. A bad wheel sensor seemed to cause problems with the ABS causing the light ot come on.
