used that site last weekend. check under engine. There is then a listing for the 2.0l engine 1g. But I used it on my 2g gst just fine.
However if you have a gs it's not gonna be the same but the idea's the same.
While your doing it replace the valve cover gasket. 20 bucks well spent!

I think there was 14 on the gst?
like 8 outside the cover, 6 under the spark plug cover. IIRC Plus removal of timing belt cover (2 bolts?)
Once you get them out removing the cover was a pain. I hit it with a mallet a few times. Didn't budge it. So I took a screw driver (old crappy one) and a hammer. I went in right where the valve cover seal was and tapped in the screw driver then pried along the front side lightly (as to not bend anything). Eventually I got it off. Turns out the gasket was all dry rotted and cracking.
Clean your valve cover while your at it, also make sure you use some high temp gasket sealant on the new gasket should you choose to change it. You don't want it leaking after you get it back together.

not to jack the thread,i can tell a nice difference in acceleration,i also rigged a air duct hose from that open part in our bumpers right to the top of the intake filter and wedged a funnal in that hole in the bumper and put the hose on the back with zip ties, like a cheesy ram air.but it is noticable.

That is a long ass sentence... There is spell check for a reason, it helps with grammar. No need to get all pissy. It was an honest question, why wouldnt you look at it before asking how many bolts there were? Since you had an 2 hours before someone answered your question, are you that lazy to get off your ass and walk out to your car and count the bolts? :screwy: You are the one being a jack off.
Its easy... Take out the bolts, unplug the coil pack and pull out the spark plug wires, pull off the vacuum line connecting the PCV valve to the intake and intake manifold. Done.

Like somebody else said before, MAKE SURE YOU CLEAN THE SURFACE WHERE THE GASKET SITS. Also don't overtighten and don't leave them too loose, if you do this then the gaskets not doing much good.

Now that's some funny shit... I know more about your engine than you ever will so I'll pass on the ass kiss. Now go out and "try" to take off your valve cover. Dont forget all the step by step instructions! Would you like me to explain how to pop the hood too?
First you open your drivers door... Look under the dash for a lever with a car posing with the hood open. Pull that and your hood should pop up just a little. Pull the hood up with your left hand and push the safety latch to the left and your hood should open freely. Once that is done, you want to look for the "Hood Prop". It lays next to the radiator, its a long rod that holds the hood open. Lift it up and place the end into the hole in the hood that says "Prop", either that or there will be an aero pointing to it. Some cars are different than others. I can get pictures if you would like? :slap:
Good luck! I know it can be tricky.

2-3 ft lbs or you will crack it
nova1313
02-20-2006, 01:45 AM
odd question where do you find a torque wrench that small. Mine only went down to 15 lbs. I just made them a few turns more then snug. They seem to be fine, no crack on valve cover.
xavier3jr
02-20-2006, 01:52 AM
i dont think they make them that small. i just do as you did
-Josh-
02-20-2006, 02:26 AM
You convert foot pounds to inch pounds, much easier that way. Really 2-3 foot pounds is a few snug turns. I believe the average human can manually turn a maximum of 17 ft. lbs.

Don't use the gasket sealant everywhere though, only on the half moon and maybe a *little bit* in some other places. That's just what I've read off the DSMtalk VFAQ, etc. Good time to get the cover powdercoated too.
nova1313
02-20-2006, 09:15 AM
I used it very very lightly around the upper side of the gasket. The only place I put it on the lower side is basically the gaskey moons as you said all the way around them on both the head side and valve cover side. Else I just laid it in the valve cover side (very very liberally.
A little goes a long way. If you put too much it will squeeze out.

I'm not trying to insult anyone where.
But this is the simplest thing in the entire world. If you have a hard time taking off a valve cover you just need to never work on cars ever again.

i couldn't get the bolt off my valve cover so it took me 2 hours to just get it off, then a piece of pipe then me and my father. Some asshole before me seems like he ran everything on this new car with an air gun at high pressure.
I don't have an air gun so it's hard for me to do. I went to change brakes yesterday on my rear wheels and had to take them to a shop just to loosen the lugs, they struggled with their air gun.
I wish owners understood the idea of torquing (sp?) properly

I wasn't being a jerk. I was simply stating that this is a very simple thing. A few bolts and it's off.
Even before I ever worked on a car I knew how to use a ratchet and take off bolts.
I see this as the equivalent as asking how to do an oil change.

I see it to being easier than that. You don't have to get underneath the car. It's probably just as easy as removing the battery.

dude. I wasn't being an ass, and like I said I wasn't trying to offend you.
And also this was my first time doing an engine swap. I don't consider myself the greatest mechanic, but a valve cover is a very routine job. I'm glad you got the help you needed but I was just stating my opinion.

Your UICP? lol I just want to ask, how did it take that long?
Well there are some hard lines that run directly over the top of the stock uicp bolts on the '99s. I didn't know what the lines were at the time so I didn't want to bend or kink them. So it took me like 3 hours to slowly try and move them a cm, then somehow try to loosen the bolts a bit. I also couldn't get the rubber "s pipe" off the throttle body elbow for the life of me. That thing would not budge. I pulled on that thing so hard the whole car rocked. I tried sticking a screwdriver under it and prying it off which made a little progress. So after an hour or 2 of that it came off.
It doesn't help either that I usually never have anyone to help me.
I had the same problem as nova on my old car. When I tried to change the oil the drain plug would not budge whatsoever. I ended up rounding the bolt and had to take it to a shop. It was tightened down WAY too much.
