Hello all. I'm thinking about buying a new 4v 4.6 mustang crate motor to put into a european Ford Capri Mk3. Ford claims about 300hp stock which is ok :disappoin so how difficult or exspensive is it to up the power some? I saw the cammer 5.0 but its out of my budget :crying:
btw has anyone tried different crank/cams for regular timing??? i might have got that wrong but i'm intrested in getting it to run like an "exotic" V8 - loads of vibration but more rpms/power??? Any help an all that, Cheers

u dont want the cammer 5.0 anyway, its unreliable as hell. thats why it has no warranty. its really just a race engine. i didnt think there was a 4v 4.6 that made 300hp... should be like 320. the 3v engine makes 300. it might not be a bad idea to consider buying something like a crate 351 also... plus its more compact and it would fit easier.

The 96-98 cobra motors made 300. It wasn't until 99 that they started rating them at 320.

is a crate 351 heavy compared to a alloy 4.6? Does it use pushrods etc?

yes it is a pushrod engine.

on fordracingparts.com the 351 crate engines are from 543 to 566lbs. the 4.6l and 5.4l crate engines range from 614lbs to 660lbs. so the 351 is lighter, they have more power too. but they are about $1000 more expensive.

ok, so the 351 is an option. But can the 4.6 be tuned for say 400 hp?

(I prefer the idea of a more modern design. Don't know if you get TVR in the states but they have a new car out with a n/a 4.0 v8 putting out 400 (b)hp. thats what i'm talking about!)

oh ic... your in the UK. not many people have mustangs there do they? well im not the best person to answer the question about tuning a 4.6. but 400hp sounds reasonable, although it might get expensive with that particular engine. they like boost tho, see 03/04 cobra.

if they sold new mustangs in right hand drive, I would own one. no doubt.

we dont get tvrs here its a real shame. The sagaris runs on 98+ octane only and we dont have gas that nice here short of racing fuels. BTW the new tvr has a 6 cyl pumping out 380 hp not a v8! I wouldent count on getting 400 hp out of a NA 4.6L, it could be done but it would be more expensive than boost.
