ECU code 10

my friend has an 88 hatchback(dual-point 1.5 liter) and lately it's been having problems. Yesterday on his way to work it died on him and he doesn't know why. We he finally got it started back up it started blowing blue smoke out the exhaust. This morning he checked the ECU and he said it was throwing a code 10. Code 10 is the air intake tempurature right? What is the best way to fix that? Since the car just died and than all of a sudden started blowing blue smoke what could that be? Thanks guys.

Yes code 10 is IAT sensor... But I doubt it has anything to do with it dieing on him and blowing blue smoke... Blue smoke usually means oil is in the a/f mixture... Could mean valve seals are leaking, or worse (worn piston rings)... Try to do a compression check on it...

Yes, when the light is on in your dash it means the ECU is throwing a code... To check them, with the engine off, and the key int he Acc position, lift up your pass seat carpet and youll see a metal plate with a hole in it... The hole will have an LED that will blink the code... Right down the number of blinks, short and long, and that is your code (or codes)...

Sure it will... If done right... It wont tell you exactly which is wrong, but neither will a leak down tester, both will just indicate a problem... Granted, a leak down is more accurate, but not everyone has an air compressor and the necc equipment to do one... A compression tester on the other hand is a $20 part for autozone...
