We lost the primary key to a 2003 Toyota highlander and now only have the Valet key. Valet key has been working for a while now but am dreading the day we lose that key too. We can't make more keys because you can't copy a valet key.

is there someone out there that can tell me how to re-program a new key without a master? I don't think the valet key helps other than being able to physically cut the key.

any help would be greatly appreciated and you'll save the day!

I have the same problem , I am still searching for a fix . I would be more than willing to just bypass the " stupid " system if I could. If you find out anything please e mail me at joepaz@msn.com I will keep looking for a fix and I will let you know if I find one

There is a way. If you take the vehicle to the dealership they can reset the entire immobilzer system with the computer. The dealership has to submit a form and in return the are issued a pin number to use to reset the immobilzer system, at which point they will have to cut you a new master key and program it. There is a way. some dealerships will tell you, that a new ECM is necessary but its not. it can be reset.

I'm also new to AF...

I live in the Toronto region. There is a guy who can 'flash' your ECU for new master keys if required. He has every type of key (toyota, nissan, honda, acura etc) and key fobs as well for unlock/lock/trunk etc depending on the model of car.

I had only a grey 'valet' key and did not want to pay Toyota $1200 for a new ECU and $500 for new keys/fobs. They told me the same thing "Sorry, need a new ECU'.

Also fyi...some Highlanders (mine is an 02') don't have an immobilizer and instead, the ECU computer needs to be 'flashed' to reprogram the keys. Check if your's does or not.

Hope this helps for those living the GTA area...his rates are good. I was charged $240 for him to reprogram the ECU, reprogram my current grey valet key, issue 2 new black toyota master keys, and 1 additional toyota keyless fob.

His contact is:

Hi, can you tell me what the ECM number is as I have an 03 and it's like it is disabled. Just quit and won't restart. I've checked and haven't found a key transponder anywhere and not sure if it even has an immobilizer or not. Any way to tell if it does? Thanks to any help.
