Sounds like it could be a bad torque converter.

does it stall as if it were a stick shift and you forgot to push in the clutch? If so, your TCC solenoid (it controls torque converter lockup/unlock) is sticking or bad. To test, look on the front of the transmission case up high between the side cover and the engine. You will see a square 4-prong plug, unplug it and drive the car to see if the problem goes away. If it does with the plug unhooked, it's definitely a TCC issue. you can drive the car temporarily with the harness unplugged, but the trans will get hotter than normal on extended highway drives, and mileage will suffer slightly also. Try Seafoam, Trans-X or Lucas automatic transmission additives and see if they can un-stick it, as these products actually work. If they can't free it up, you'll need to replace the TCC solenoid.
